Description

Barrett built the MRAD SMR for people who know exactly what they want their rifle to do. SMR stands for Single Mission Rifle, and the idea is simple: take the proven MRAD platform, set it up in one caliber from the factory, and strip away the multi-caliber hardware most owners never end up using. What you get is a slimmer, lighter rifle that shaves roughly two and a half pounds and about an inch of length off the standard MRAD while keeping around 90 percent parts commonality with it. This one comes chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 24 inch fluted match-grade barrel and a 1:8 twist, a combination that wrings every bit of ballistic advantage out of the cartridge at distance.

How the MRAD SMR Differs From the Standard MRAD

The biggest change is the barrel mounting. Instead of the quick-change system, the SMR uses a free-floated barrel secured in the upper receiver with a standard barrel nut. The folding stock is gone too, replaced by a fixed stock with a vertically adjustable cheek piece and spacers for dialing in length of pull. Fewer moving parts, less weight, same Barrett accuracy, and the company backs it with a .75 MOA standard.

Built Around the Long Shot

The monolithic upper is machined from 7000-series aluminum and wears a full-length 21.75 inch Picatinny top rail, so mounting a serious long-range scope is straightforward. Inside the lower sits Barrett's fully adjustable match-grade trigger module, which drops out without tools when you want to fine-tune or clean it. The thumb safety can be set up for left or right hand use, the magazine release is ambidextrous, and the bolt rides in a polymer guide that keeps the action running smooth even when things get dirty. A Magpul MOE grip rounds out the controls, and the whole rifle can accept most M4 pattern grips if you prefer something else.

Feeding the MRAD SMR 6.5 Creedmoor

A detachable 10-round magazine comes in the box, giving you 10+1 capacity for match stages or extended range sessions. At 46.5 inches overall and around 12 pounds bare, it settles into bags and bipods with the kind of steadiness precision work demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swap barrels on the MRAD SMR like the standard MRAD?

No, and that's by design. The SMR is set up from the factory in a single caliber, with the free-floated barrel held in the upper receiver by a standard barrel nut instead of the quick-change system. Skipping the caliber conversion hardware is what makes it lighter and slimmer than the standard MRAD.

How accurate is the Barrett MRAD SMR in 6.5 Creedmoor?

Barrett holds the SMR to a .75 MOA accuracy standard, the same performance benchmark as the standard MRAD. Paired with the 24 inch fluted match-grade barrel and 1:8 twist, it stabilizes heavy 6.5 Creedmoor match bullets and stays consistent well past 1,000 yards with quality ammo behind it.

Is the fixed stock on the MRAD SMR adjustable at all?

Yes. While the stock doesn't fold, the cheek piece adjusts vertically without tools so you can get a solid cheek weld behind just about any scope height, and it's reversible for a different side profile. Length of pull is handled with spacers, so you can tailor the fit to your build and shooting position.

Does the MRAD SMR come with any sights or a scope?

It ships optic ready with no sights installed. The 21.75 inch full-length Picatinny rail on the monolithic upper gives you plenty of real estate for a long-range scope and accessories, and the forward receiver is drilled and tapped for additional rail sections at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions.
