Some rifles are built to do a little of everything. The Barrett Model 99 is not one of them. This is a single shot, bolt action rifle with exactly one job: putting a .416 Barrett round precisely where you want it at distances most rifles never see. The cartridge itself was developed by Barrett to fly flatter and stay supersonic longer than the .50 BMG, which makes this setup a favorite for extreme long-range steel matches where every bit of ballistic efficiency counts.
The receiver starts as a one-piece 7000 series aluminum extrusion, and the 32-inch match-grade heavy barrel is pressed and locked into it, creating a rigid, unitized platform that holds zero and shoots consistently as the barrel heats up. The bolt is machined from a single piece of S-7 tool steel and locks up with 15 lugs into a machined barrel extension, so there is plenty of strength behind that big cartridge. With so few moving parts, there is very little to fuss over, which is a big part of why this design has stuck around. A 1:12 twist stabilizes the long, high-BC .416 projectiles, and the three-port muzzle brake takes real bite out of the recoil. The Sorbothane recoil pad on the fixed stock soaks up what is left.
Up top you get a 13.75-inch M1913 rail cut with 27 MOA of built-in cant, which keeps plenty of elevation in your scope for the truly long shots this rifle was made for. The whole rig wears a Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish that handles weather and range wear without complaint, and a black polymer grip and manual thumb safety round out the controls. At roughly 25 pounds with a 50-inch overall length, this is a rifle you set up behind, not one you hike with, and that weight is exactly what keeps it planted shot after shot. Barrett includes an adjustable bipod and a Pelican hard case, so it arrives ready for the bench or the firing line.
