Description

The Ballistic Advantage 16" Hanson barrel is one of the easier ways to put a genuinely accurate 5.56 NATO barrel into an AR-15 build without doing a bunch of extra assembly work. It comes chambered for 5.56 NATO, so it runs both 5.56 and .223 Remington, and it's cut from 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium steel with a QPQ corrosion-resistant finish that holds up to heat and weather over a long service life. The 1:7 twist rate leans toward heavier projectiles like 62 and 77 grain loads, though it'll still stabilize standard 55 grain stuff just fine.

What Makes the Hanson Profile Worth a Look

The BA Hanson profile is the whole selling point here. It's a shoulder-less contour designed to keep barrel whip in check and let the barrel settle back to its home position quickly, which is a real advantage when you're running strings of fire. This is the .625" journal version, meaning it's a thinner, lighter take on the original Hanson contour, so your finished rifle balances well and doesn't feel nose-heavy after a day at the range.

The Gas Block That's Already Done for You

A lot of barrels leave you sourcing and pinning a gas block yourself. This one ships with a pinned low-profile gas block installed from the factory, which takes a fussy step off your build list and guarantees the alignment is right. The mid-length gas system gives you better dwell time and smoother cycling than a carbine-length setup, and the difference in felt recoil is something you'll notice.

Built for Reliable Feeding

The barrel extension is an extended M4 feed ramp coated in FailZero Nickel Boron. That coating cuts friction and fouling, so rounds chamber cleanly whether you're running brass, steel, or a mixed bag. One thing to keep in mind: Hanson barrels aren't set up to work with aftermarket piston kits, so this is a direct impingement barrel through and through. For a mid-tier build that shoots better than its price suggests, it's tough to beat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Ballistic Advantage Hanson barrel come with the gas block installed?

Yes. This barrel ships with a low-profile gas block already pinned in place from the factory. That means you don't have to source, align, or pin one yourself, which is one of the reasons this barrel is such a good value for a build.

What ammo works best with the 1:7 twist on this 16" barrel?

The 1:7 twist rate is optimized for heavier bullets, so it really shines with 62 grain and 77 grain loads. It will still stabilize lighter 55 grain 5.56 and .223 without issue, so you've got flexibility for range days and defensive use alike.

Can I run a suppressor or muzzle device on the Hanson barrel?

You can. The muzzle is threaded 1/2-28 and cut concentric to the bore, so it accepts standard AR-15 muzzle devices and suppressors. Just make sure whatever you thread on is properly indexed and torqued.

Is this barrel compatible with a piston system?

No. Hanson barrels are built for direct impingement and are not designed to work with aftermarket piston kits. If you're running a DI gas system, which is the standard AR-15 setup, you're good to go.
