The Battle Arms Development Workhorse 9.5in M-LOK handguard is exactly what the name suggests: a no-nonsense, do-it-all free-float rail for Mil-Spec AR-15 builds. Machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and finished in Type 3 black hardcoat anodizing, it shrugs off corrosion and hard use while tipping the scales at right around 7.8 oz with the barrel nut. Battle Arms took the lightweight-and-slim approach seriously here. You get M-LOK slots at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions for lights, hand stops, bipods, and grips, while the areas that don't need mounting hardware are skeletonized to shed weight and help with airflow during longer strings of fire. The full-length 1913 Picatinny top rail runs the length of the handguard, giving you a solid, repeatable surface for optics and backup iron sights. That top rail is notch-cut to line up cleanly with BAD upper receivers, which gives the whole front end that seamless one-piece look if you're running a matching Workhorse or RigidRail upper.
Because it free-floats, the handguard makes no contact with the barrel past the barrel nut. That keeps pressure off the barrel from a mounted sling, bipod, or your support hand, which helps your rifle shoot more consistently downrange. Yes, it's designed to fit all Mil-Spec AR-15 upper receivers using the included proprietary barrel nut. The notch-cut top rail is shaped to line up flush with Battle Arms Development uppers for a matched look, but it installs and functions on any standard Mil-Spec upper. Just confirm your gas block clears the 1.36in internal diameter.
The Workhorse uses a proprietary barrel nut, so you'll want the correct install wrench (a 1-3/16 crow's foot style) along with an upper vise block and a foot-pound torque wrench. A standard armorer's wrench won't engage this barrel nut properly. Battle Arms sells the matching install wrench separately if you don't already have one.
The 1.36in internal diameter gives you generous barrel clearance, which works well with most low-profile gas blocks and many suppressor-ready barrel profiles. Always measure your specific barrel and can setup to be sure, since heavier profiles and larger suppressors can vary. For most standard builds, clearance is not an issue.
It comes in at about 7.83 oz including the barrel nut, which makes it a genuinely lightweight option for the length. The skeletonized cuts remove material where you don't need mounting points, keeping front-end weight down.
