The SOPMOD buttstock has been a favorite on serious AR-15 builds for a long time, and for good reason. B5 Systems took the original Crane NSWC design and gave it a real upgrade rather than just copying it. This woodland camo version brings the same wide, comfortable cheek weld and useful storage that made the platform popular, plus enough reinforcement to shrug off hard use. It runs about 10.6 inches long, weighs in around 11.8 ounces, and drops onto any mil-spec carbine buffer tube.
The big story here is toughness. B5 packed roughly double the resin and glass content of the earlier SOPMOD design into this one, which they say makes it two to three times stronger. That extra beef shows up where it counts, with color-matched steel hardware, one-piece anti-rotation quick-disconnect sling mounts on both sides, and a sure-grip stock latch that's easy to work even with gloves. Folks who run these tend to notice the fit right away since it locks onto the buffer tube snug with no wobble or play, and installation is about a one-minute job.
Both sides of the stock hold water-resistant compartments sealed with o-rings, which is handy for stashing spare CR123 batteries, a bolt, or other small essentials in the field. The tubes are designed so they can't back out without dismounting the stock, so you're not going to lose your gear on a hike. Up top you get that generous, flat cheek weld that shooters consistently call out as one of the best in the class, and the cushioned non-slip buttpad keeps the gun planted on your shoulder without wanting to slide around.
Everything on the SOP-1188 is made from mil-spec materials and finishes, and it's proudly made in the USA. The woodland camo pattern is molded right into the polymer, so it won't rub or flake off like a spray finish, and it pairs nicely with a green-and-tan build or a rifle you've already dressed up with paint. If you want a durable, no-nonsense stock that does more than the basics, this one earns its keep.
It's built for mil-spec carbine receiver extensions, which is what most standard AR-15 builds use. It will not fit commercial-spec tubes since those have a slightly larger diameter. If you're running a Magpul, BCM, Aero, Geissele, or similar mil-spec tube, you're good to go.
It's about as simple as it gets. You depress the adjustment lever, slide the old stock off the buffer tube, and slide this one on the same way, no tools required. Most folks have it done in a minute or two.
The dual water-resistant tubes are sized for small essentials like spare CR123 batteries, a spare bolt, or other little bits of kit. They seal with o-rings and are designed so they can't fall out without dismounting the stock, so your gear stays put in the field. Keep in mind the tube diameter is on the smaller side, so it's meant for compact items rather than bulky gear.
