Worn, chipped, or dull sights are one of those little problems that quietly cost you a good sight picture. The Birchwood Casey Super Bright Pen Kit is a simple fix for exactly that. This three-pen set gives you neon green, fluorescent red, and flat white in a fast-drying, lead-free paint that holds up well and goes on with a chisel-point felt tip. No brushes, no mixing, no mess. Just rub it on like a paint marker and let it dry.
The trick to getting the brightest color is layering. Lay down two coats of the flat white as an undercoat first, let each coat dry fully, then top it with the neon green or fluorescent red. That white base is what makes the color really pop instead of getting muddy against dark steel. Folks who have run these pens on 1911s, revolvers, and carry guns consistently mention how much easier it is to pick up the front sight afterward, and cleanup is easy too since the paint wipes off with solvent while it is still wet.
This kit is not just for handguns. It works on rifle and shotgun sights, and it is a favorite among bowhunters for refreshing faded archery pins. The pens are compact enough to toss in a range bag or hunting pack, so you can touch things up on the fly. One thing worth knowing: the felt tips are on the wider side, so for tiny dot-style sights, a lot of users dab a little paint onto cardboard and apply it with a toothpick for finer control.
Between the three colors and the durability of the paint, one kit goes a long way across your safe. It is one of those low-cost maintenance items that punches above its weight, keeping your sights crisp whether you are refreshing range gear or getting a hunting rig ready for the season.
Start with the flat white pen and apply two coats as an undercoat, letting each one dry fully. Then add a coat of neon green or fluorescent red on top. That white base reflects light back through the color and makes it noticeably brighter than painting straight onto dark steel.
They can, but the felt tips are a bit wide for tiny dots. A common trick is to press some paint onto a piece of cardboard and apply it to the dot with a toothpick for cleaner, more precise control. For standard front and rear blade sights, you can apply the paint directly.
The paint is durable once cured, but it wipes off easily with a little solvent while it is still wet. That makes it forgiving if you slip or want to redo a coat. Just be sure to let each layer dry before adding the next for the best adhesion.
Yes. Along with rifle, pistol, and shotgun sights, these pens are great for refreshing faded archery pins. The compact size also makes them easy to keep in a hunting pack for quick touch-ups in the field.
