The Birchwood Casey AR500 Deer Silhouette gives you a life-shaped target that stands up to serious shooting. It's laser-cut from 3/8-inch AR500 steel, the same grade of hardened plate that's become the go-to standard for reactive steel, and the silhouette measures around 21 inches so it reads clearly out at distance. When your round connects, you get that satisfying ring and a visible reaction, which beats walking downrange to check paper every few strings.
AR500 refers to the hardness of the steel, not the thickness, and that hardness is what keeps the face smooth instead of cratering. This plate is rated to handle up to 3000 ft-lbs of bullet energy, so it takes centerfire rifle and handgun work without dishing out early. The edges come off the laser cutter clean and burr-free, and the whole plate wears a bright white powder coat that pops against dirt, brush, or a berm so you can call your hits fast.
The three-hole pattern is the handy part here. You can bolt it flat, hang it from chain, or rig it on a stand, and angling it slightly downward sends splatter toward the ground where it belongs. A good rule of thumb with 3/8-inch AR500 is keeping rifles back at least 100 yards and pistols at 10 to 15 yards, and backing up a bit more if you're running hot rounds over 3000 fps. Stick to standard lead-core ammo and skip steel-core or armor-piercing, and a plate like this can outlast a whole lot of range trips.
Whether you're sighting in before deer season or just want a fun reactive target that survives the weekend, this silhouette earns its keep. It's a practical, ring-and-forget piece of steel that turns any safe backstop into your own personal range.
The 3/8-inch AR500 plate handles most handgun calibers and common centerfire rifle rounds like .223, .308, and 30-06. It's rated up to 3000 ft-lbs of bullet energy. Stick with standard lead-core ammunition and avoid steel-core or armor-piercing rounds, which can crater the surface.
A solid starting point is 100 yards for rifles and 10 to 15 yards for handguns. If you're running high-velocity rounds over 3000 fps, back up a little farther to keep the plate from pitting. Angling the target slightly downward also helps direct splatter toward the ground.
It uses a three-hole pattern that gives you flexibility for how you set it up. You can bolt it to a stand, hang it from chain, or rig it on a post. That versatility makes it easy to work into just about any backyard or club range setup you've got.
The bright white powder coat will chip around the impact zone with repeated hits, which is normal for any painted steel target. The coating is there for visibility, not protection, and a fresh coat of spray paint brings the contrast right back. The AR500 steel underneath is what does the real work.
