There's something satisfying about that steel ping the second your shot lands, and the Birchwood Casey AR500 Armadillo target delivers it round after round. This 13-inch silhouette is cut from 3/8-inch AR500 steel, the same abrasion-resistant plate serious shooters trust for high-volume range days. It's laser-cut for clean, burr-free edges and finished in a bright white powder coat so your hits stand out clearly even at distance.
AR500 is hardened steel built to take repeated centerfire impacts without denting or cratering. This plate is rated for up to 3000 foot-pounds of bullet energy, which covers a wide range of handgun and rifle cartridges when you're set up at proper distances. The single scoring hole gives you a clean aiming reference and doubles as a mounting point, so you can hang it from a stand, chain, or bracket and let it swing freely to soak up energy.
For handguns like 9mm, .40, and .45, a minimum of 10 yards is the standard starting point, while rifle rounds like .223 and 5.56 want at least 100 yards to keep fragmentation heading toward the ground. Angling the plate slightly downward and letting it hang loose does two things: it directs splatter safely and it lets the steel move so it lasts longer. Skip steel-core and armor-piercing ammo, since that's the fastest way to pit even good AR500.
The Armadillo shape brings a little personality to the range compared to a plain round gong, and it makes a fun reactive target for plinking, sight-in sessions, or drills where you want honest feedback. Pair it with proper eye protection and a solid stand, and this thing will outlast stacks of paper targets.
The 3/8-inch AR500 plate is rated up to 3000 foot-pounds, which covers most common handgun rounds and many centerfire rifle cartridges when you're at the right distance. Stick to standard lead-core or jacketed ammo and avoid steel-core or armor-piercing loads, since those will pit even hardened steel. Match your distance to your caliber and you'll get years of use out of it.
For handguns like 9mm, .40, and .45, 10 yards is the usual minimum. For rifle rounds like .223 and 5.56, plan on at least 100 yards to keep fragments heading toward the ground. When in doubt, add distance, since it keeps you safer and helps the steel last longer.
It has a single hole that works as both a scoring point and a mounting point, so you can hang it from a chain, bracket, or target stand. Letting it hang loose so it swings freely helps absorb impact energy and extends the life of the plate. Angling it slightly downward also directs splatter toward the ground for safer shooting.
The bright white finish is mostly about visibility, making your hits easy to spot downrange without walking up to the target. It also gives the steel a bit of protection between range days. As you shoot, hits will show up clearly against the white, so you get instant visual feedback on top of the audible ring.
