The Birchwood Casey RND12 is a 12-inch round steel gong made from half-inch NM500 plate, the kind of abrasion-resistant steel that shrugs off repeated hits and keeps giving you that satisfying clang on every solid strike. NM500 runs right around 500 on the Brinell hardness scale, putting it in the same performance neighborhood as the AR500 steel most target shooters already know and trust. At a foot across, it gives you a generous aiming surface that works great for both handgun drills and centerfire rifle practice.
The face is finished in a high-contrast black, red and white powder-coat, which does two jobs at once. First, it makes the plate easy to spot and aim at across the range, even in flat light or at distance. Second, the coating helps protect the steel between range days. When the paint gets chewed up from shooting, a quick repaint brings your aiming point right back.
This plate uses square mounting holes designed to take carriage bolts, and it features double hang holes so you can rig it on a standard target stand, chain, or frame. The carriage bolts aren't included, so grab a pair when you pick this up. For the best results and the longest life out of your steel, hang it with a slight downward angle so it can swing on impact. That movement bleeds off energy and helps direct fragments toward the ground instead of back at the line.
Stick to standard lead-core centerfire ammo and keep your distances reasonable, roughly 100 yards or more for rifle and around 10 yards for pistol, and this plate will hold up to thousands of rounds. Steer clear of steel-core or armor-piercing loads, which can damage the surface and create unsafe conditions. Always wear eye protection when you're shooting steel. Set up a few of these at different sizes and distances and you've got yourself a fun, reusable range that gives instant audible feedback every time.
It's rated for centerfire rifle and handgun rounds using standard lead-core ammunition. Keep rifle shots at reasonable distances, generally 100 yards or more, and pistol at around 10 yards or beyond. Avoid steel-core, armor-piercing, or solid-copper bullets, which can pit or punch through the plate and create unsafe deflections.
For most target work, they perform about the same. Both come in at roughly 500 Brinell hardness, and NM500 is often noted for slightly better impact toughness. You'll get the same loud ring and long service life you'd expect from a quality AR500 gong.
Yes, the carriage bolts are not included. The plate has square mounting holes sized for carriage bolts plus double hang holes, so you'll want to grab a couple of bolts along with a chain, stand, or frame to hang it from. Mounting it at a slight downward angle helps it swing and extends the life of the steel.
The black, red and white coating is mostly there to give you a bright, easy-to-see aiming point and to protect the steel between sessions. The paint will get chewed up where your rounds land, which is normal. A quick repaint or a set of paint markers gets your aiming surface looking fresh again.
