Description

Few rifles draw a crowd like a Thompson, and the 1927A-1C Lightweight Deluxe makes owning one a lot friendlier to your shoulders. Auto-Ordnance machines the receiver from aluminum instead of solid steel, trimming the carbine down to around 9.5 pounds, a full three and a half pounds lighter than the classic blued steel version. Everything that makes the Tommy Gun instantly recognizable is still here: the 16.5 inch finned barrel with compensator, the top mounted charging handle, the vertical foregrip, and that unmistakable profile that turns a casual range trip into a conversation.

What Sets the 1927A-1C Lightweight Apart

This is the deluxe walnut version, not a synthetic stand-in. The fixed buttstock, vertical foregrip, and grip are genuine American walnut, paired with a blued barrel for that period-correct look. The semi-auto action runs from a closed bolt, and sighting is handled by a blade front paired with a rear aperture. Overall length comes in at 41 inches from buttpad to muzzle, and every one of these is built in the USA by Auto-Ordnance, the same name that has been attached to the Thompson since John T. Thompson founded the company back in 1916.

Feeding Your Thompson: Drum and Stick Included

The T550D package is the one most folks want because it includes the famous 50 round drum right in the box, along with a 20 round stick magazine for quicker loading sessions. The drum is manufactured entirely in the US and built as close to the original specifications as possible, so it looks right hanging under the receiver. Between the two magazines you can spend an afternoon working through soft-shooting 45 ACP with very little muzzle rise, since the weight and compensator soak up most of what the cartridge dishes out.

Why the 1927A-1C Lightweight Earns a Spot in the Safe

Collectors love it for the history, and range regulars love it because it is genuinely fun to shoot. Lighter to carry, easier to hold on target for long strings, and every bit as photogenic as the original, this Thompson gives you the full Tommy Gun experience without the full Tommy Gun heft.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much lighter is the 1927A-1C Lightweight compared to the standard Thompson carbine?

The aluminum receiver brings this carbine in at roughly 9.5 pounds, while the traditional steel receiver 1927A-1 weighs about 13 pounds. That three and a half pound difference is very noticeable when you are shouldering the rifle for long range sessions or carrying it around all day. You keep the classic look and balance without the full steel heft.

What ammo runs best in the Thompson 1927A-1C?

Stick with quality brass-cased .45 ACP factory loads. Auto-Ordnance specifically advises against steel-cased ammunition in their Thompson long guns, and the platform is happiest with standard pressure ball ammo. Good brass-cased range ammo will keep it cycling smoothly and protect the gun over the long haul.

Is the furniture on this model real wood or polymer?

The T550D is the deluxe walnut version, so the fixed buttstock, vertical foregrip, and grip are all genuine American walnut. Auto-Ordnance does make a separate lightweight model with walnut-grain polymer furniture, but that is a different SKU. This one gives you real wood on top of the weight savings from the aluminum receiver.

Does the 1927A-1C Lightweight accept both drum and stick magazines?

Yes, it runs both, and this package includes one of each: a 50 round drum and a 20 round stick. The drum is made entirely in the US and built as close to the original Thompson drum specifications as possible. Additional drums and stick magazines are available from Auto-Ordnance if you want spares.
