If you have ever chased down the sproing and rattle of a standard AR-15 buffer spring, the Armaspec Stealth Recoil Spring SRS H Gen 4 is the fix a lot of builders reach for. It replaces your factory buffer and spring as one self-contained, multi-stage unit that keeps the spring from riding along the inner wall of the buffer tube. That single change is what kills most of the noise and gives the action a softer, more elastic feel instead of the usual mechanical clank. This is the H weight, which carries an equivalent buffer weight of 3.8 oz and works well in a wide range of 5.56 carbines.
The Gen 4 is the current version of Armaspec's design, and it cleaned up a few small details from earlier runs. Armaspec dropped the o-ring from the weight, swapped in a machined cap on the rod, and reworked the end hardware to cut down on potential failure points. Inside you get a dual-spring setup that stays under constant tension against the bolt carrier, which is a big part of why cycling feels smoother and quieter than a stock spring and buffer. It is made in the U.S.A. and finished in a stainless and black look.
Installation is about as easy as AR upgrades get. Hinge open the upper, pull your existing buffer and spring, and slide the SRS in with the polymer bumper facing the rear and the weight toward the bolt carrier. It runs with or without the buffer retainer pin, and a lot of folks leave the retainer out for easier maintenance down the road. It is built for carbine-length buffer tubes, and works with most bolt carriers, though a few carriers with a rear opening under .60 inches will not play nice. Keep in mind it won't clear certain folding stock adapters because of the added length at the rear of the carrier. A quick check with a 3/32 hex key to snug the screws before install is smart, and re-tightening during routine cleaning keeps everything solid.

No, the SRS can be installed with or without the buffer retainer pin. Many people run it without the retainer for easier maintenance, since removing the unit with the pin in place can require a flathead screwdriver to hold the pin down. Either way, it drops in like a standard buffer and spring.
