The Armaspec Stealth Recoil Spring (SRS) Gen4 is a single sealed unit that takes over both the buffer and spring duties in your AR-9. Instead of a bare spring bouncing off the inside of your buffer tube on every shot, this design runs the spring over an internal guide rod so it never touches the tube wall. That one change is where the smoother feel and the quieter action come from, and it's why so many folks reach for one when they want a more refined feel out of a blowback carbine.
This is a multi-stage setup, which is the part that separates it from just running a heavier buffer. The buffer mass stays under constant tension against the bolt carrier, and a secondary stage kicks in while the action cycles to soak up more of the felt recoil. The payoff is a rifle that feels smoother, cycles more consistently, and loses that classic metallic spring noise you get from a standard carbine setup. This particular model is tuned for 9mm and carries a complete system weight around 8.4 oz with an equivalent buffer weight of roughly 5.4 oz.
Installation is about as simple as it gets. It drops right into a carbine-length buffer tube where your old buffer and spring came out, usually in about five minutes. Most people run it without the buffer retainer for easier maintenance since the mass stays under tension on its own. Two things worth knowing before you order: the SRS needs a bolt carrier with a rear opening of at least .60 inches to function, and on 9mm carriers the extra weight on the back of the carrier (held in by a spring pin) needs to come off for proper cycling.
The Gen4 revision cleaned up a few things from earlier generations, swapping to a machined cap on the rod and reworked end hardware to trim out potential failure points. It's made in the U.S.A., finished in black, and backed by Armaspec's lifetime warranty.
It works with most AR-9 blowback carriers, but there are two things to check. The carrier needs a rear opening of at least .60 inches, and a handful of carriers on the market run smaller than that and won't function with it. On 9mm carriers you'll also need to remove the extra weight on the back of the carrier, which is held in place by a spring pin.
A standard AR spring rides bare inside the buffer tube and rubs the wall every time the bolt cycles, which is what creates that metallic "twang." The Stealth Recoil Spring runs its spring over an internal guide rod so it never contacts the tube wall. That eliminates the noise and gives you a cleaner, smoother-feeling action.
Not at all. It drops straight into a carbine-length buffer tube in the same spot your old buffer and spring came out, and most people have it swapped in about five minutes. It's a good idea to retighten the assembly screws with a 3/32 hex key before installing and any time you do maintenance.
A heavier buffer only adds mass, while the SRS is a multi-stage system. The first stage keeps constant tension on the bolt carrier and a secondary stage engages during cycling to absorb more felt recoil. The result is a smoother, more elastic recoil impulse rather than the mechanical thump of a plain buffer and spring.
