The Area 419 ZERO Gen 2 is a bench press built for handloaders who care about repeatability above everything else. It's milled from American billet aluminum and stainless steel, and the heart of the thing is a precision-ground 1.25" ram riding on a self-lubricating linear sleeve bearing with less than .0006" of diametric clearance. Area 419 runs 14 bearings throughout the press, including roller thrust bearings on the side plates and a PTFE-lined bearing at the core, so energy transfers cleanly from the handle to the ram with near-zero slop. Each one is hand measured and fitted so the ram and bearing mate up right, and the result is a stroke that feels like nothing else on a reloading bench.
The zero-slop turret head is the real draw here. Instead of pulling dies in and out and re-setting them every time, you lock your dies into the turret once and index between them. Changing die positions takes a half-turn of the supplied T-handle, and when you index the turret the repeatability variance comes in under .0005". The 7/8" head accepts standard 7/8"x14 dies and standard shellholders, with the turret also able to run 1-1/4" die attachments down the road without any thread-stacking adapters.
This generation keeps everything people loved about the original and sharpens the details. The linkage is firmer at the bottom of the stroke, which is what folks asked for so they could cam over and float the shellholder just below a die. Area 419 also worked the stroke to feel even smoother right out of the box. On the convenience side, there's an internally contained primer-catch system with a detent slide-out drawer, which does away with the surgical hoses and baby food jars dangling off lesser presses, plus a storage slot for the torque tool right on the body.
The opening handles sizing and seating of cases up to 338 Lapua Magnum, with a 4.4" ram stroke and 4.75" total opening for working tall cartridges. The adjustable handle can be set for left or right-handed operation, and Gen 2 keeps full compatibility with Gen 1 accessories like stands, trays, shellholders, and turrets. The 7/8" turret head accepts standard 7/8"x14 threaded dies and standard shellholders, so your existing die collection will drop right in. Area 419 notes a preference for Redding shellholders, but any standard holder works. The turret is also set up to run 1-1/4" die attachments without thread-stacking adapters.
The opening handles sizing and seating of cases up to .338 Lapua Magnum, with a 4.4" ram stroke and 4.75" total opening for tall cases. It can be used for Cheytac-class reloading, though depending on your die setup and bullet length you may need to scoop the bullet into the seating die before seating.
Yes. Area 419 built the Gen 2 with full Gen 1 accessory compatibility, so your press stands, storage trays, shellholders, and turrets all carry over. Because the linkage was changed, you may just want to re-check your die adjustment after swapping over.
The biggest change is a firmer linkage at the bottom of the stroke, which lets you cam over and float the shellholder below a die if that's how you like to size. The stroke was also refined to feel smoother from the very first pull. Gen 2 adds creature comforts too, like a detent on the primer tray and a torque tool storage slot on the body of the press.
