Description

Area 419 built the ZERO locking die rings after figuring out that standard lock rings were a sneaky source of inconsistency on the bench. Most rings on the market lock down with a set screw or a split-clamp design, which means they grab onto the die and let it find its own alignment. These do the opposite. The large diameter puts more surface contact against the turret or press, so the ring forces the die to sit square instead of chasing the die's position. This Hybrid Pack is the mix-and-match option, loaded with two 7/8×14 rings and two 1-1/4×12 rings plus the matching wrench, so you can set up both common die thread sizes from one kit.

What Sets the ZERO Hybrid Pack Apart

There's roughly .350 inch of thread engagement on these rings, which is about 15 to 25 percent more than you'll see on a typical lock ring. That extra thread, close to a full additional turn, gives the ring more leverage to square the die to the press. The threads and the bottom face are precision machined from stainless steel, and the rings carry a black nitride finish while the aluminum wrench wears a black hardcoat anodize. Each ring measures .500 inch thick with a 1.685 inch outside diameter.

Why the Internal Wrench Design Matters

Traditional lock rings put a flat or knurling on the outside, so you end up wrestling a wrench between dies on a crowded multi-die head. Area 419 moved the wrench engagement to the inside of the ring, which clears up that whole headache. One tip from folks who run these: twist the die along with the wrench when loosening so the wrench keeps its bite.

Fitment for the ZERO Hybrid Pack

These rings are a natural match for the Area 419 ZERO press, and they'll work on standard single-stage presses too. They are not a fit for co-ax presses, and the large diameter means they won't drop into every slot on a Redding T-7. If you run a mix of 7/8 and 1-1/4 dies, this pack covers both bases with the same proven ring design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly comes in the Area 419 ZERO Hybrid Pack?

The Hybrid Pack includes two 7/8×14 rings and two 1-1/4×12 rings, for four rings total, plus the matching die wrench. The rings carry a black nitride finish and the aluminum wrench has a black hardcoat anodize. This is the mix-and-match option for anyone running both common die thread sizes.

Will these ZERO die rings work on presses other than the Area 419 ZERO?

Yes. They're designed to shine on the Area 419 ZERO press but work well on standard single-stage presses too. They are not compatible with co-ax presses, and because of the large diameter they won't fit every slot on a Redding T-7.

How are these different from standard set-screw or clamp-style lock rings?

Instead of grabbing the die and letting it align however it lands, the large diameter puts more surface contact on the press so the ring forces the die to sit square. They also run about .350 inch of thread engagement, roughly 15 to 25 percent more than typical lock rings. The wrench engagement is internal, so you don't have to fight a tool between dies on a crowded head.

Any tips for using the internal wrench on the ZERO rings?

The wrench engages the inside of the ring, which keeps you from wrestling tools around the outside on a multi-die setup. When loosening, twist the die along with the wrench so the wrench keeps a solid bite and doesn't slip. Snug them down and these rings hold the die with no movement.
