Description

Ambi charging handles have taken over the AR world, and for good reason, but that right-side latch has a habit of catching a knuckle or fingernail on the standard forward assist every time you run it. Forward Controls Design built the LDFA to fix exactly that. It ditches the raised rim and shrinks the plunger face down to a smaller footprint, so there's nothing left for your hand to snag on when you're charging or clearing the gun.

What Makes the Low Drag Forward Assist Different

The magic here is subtraction. By eliminating the external rim and reducing the diameter of the button, the LDFA gives your hand a clean, uninterrupted path rearward when you pull on the right latch of an ambidextrous charging handle. That smaller face doesn't cost you any function either, so on the rare occasion you need to nudge the bolt home, it still does the job like a standard assist. You get a choice of a dimpled button or circular serrations similar to a factory unit, so the feel under your thumb is up to you.

Materials and Build on the LDFA

Forward Controls Design keeps their reputation for putting function ahead of flash, and this piece is no exception. The LDFA is CNC machined from 4130 steel bar stock, then properly heat treated and finished in a salt bath black nitride coating that shrugs off corrosion and wear. It's designed and made in the USA to TDP specs and tolerances, with the plunger measuring right around 0.311 inches, well inside the mil-spec window.

Fitment Notes for the Forward Assist

This drops into standard forged upper receivers built to Colt TDP specs, which run a 0.314 inch plunger hole. If you're working with a billet upper or a forged receiver of unknown origin, it's worth measuring the forward assist plunger hole first. Anything under roughly 0.312 inches can make for a tight fit, since some out-of-spec receivers run undersized. For most folks running a quality forged upper, it's a straightforward swap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the LDFA fit my AR-15 upper receiver?

It's built to Colt TDP specs and tolerances, so it drops right into standard forged upper receivers that run a 0.314 inch plunger hole. If you have a billet upper or a forged receiver of unknown origin, measure the forward assist plunger hole first. Anything under about 0.312 inches can end up being a tight fit.

Why would I want a low drag forward assist over a standard one?

The main draw is running an ambidextrous charging handle. When you pull the right latch, a standard rimmed forward assist tends to catch your knuckle or fingernail. The LDFA's rimless, reduced-diameter design clears that out of the way so your hand moves rearward without snagging.

Does the smaller button hurt how well the forward assist works?

No. The reduced plunger face is smaller, but it still functions like a standard forward assist when you need to seat the bolt. You're only losing the parts that cause snagging, not the function.

What is the LDFA made of and how durable is it?

It's CNC machined from 4130 steel bar stock, then heat treated and coated in a black nitride finish. That combination gives you solid wear resistance and corrosion protection for a part that lives inside the receiver. It's designed and made in the USA.
