The castle nut is one of those little AR-15 parts nobody thinks about until it backs off and your buffer tube goes loose. Forward Controls Design built the CNF to make sure that never happens. It's based on the original mil-spec (TDP) castle nut, but reworked in the spots that matter most, then finished in a burnt OD green Cerakote that pairs nicely with a green or two-tone build.
Two changes do the heavy lifting here. First, the staking notches were re-cut at a 30-degree angle instead of the standard 45, which makes them roughly 25% longer and deeper than a factory nut. That gives your staking punch more material to bite into, so the stake holds harder. Second, they added a fourth staking notch. Traditional castle nuts have three, and after torquing you sometimes end up with a notch buried where you can't reach it. With four evenly spaced notches, you'll always have three visible and available no matter where the nut lands.
The CNF is billet machined from 4140 PH steel rather than the softer pot metal you'll find on bargain nuts, then coated in OD green Cerakote for corrosion resistance and a clean look. There's also a set of coarse serrations on the wrench side, a nice touch that lets you thread it down toward the endplate by hand without your fingers catching on sharp wrench slots. Every one is made in the USA.
Spin it down against your receiver endplate, torque it to the 38 to 42 ft-lb range the Army manual calls for, and stake it in two places per the technical manual. FCD even prints TM-based install instructions right on the back of the packaging card. One tip from folks who run Cerakoted nuts: the coating can add a hair of thickness to the threads, so take your time starting it and don't force it. Do it once, stake it, and you can forget about it for the life of the rifle.
The CNF keeps the proven TDP design but adds a fourth staking notch and re-cuts each notch at 30 degrees so they run about 25% longer and deeper. That means more material for your stake to grab and a nut that stays locked once installed. It's also machined from 4140 PH steel rather than soft cast metal, so it holds up better over time.
Yes, the CNF is built to standard mil-spec receiver extension threads and works with a normal carbine buffer tube. Keep in mind the Cerakote finish can add a tiny bit of thickness to the threads, so start it by hand and take your time rather than forcing it on. Once it's threaded down, torque and stake it as normal.

The serrations sit on the wrench side and give you a grippy surface to spin the nut down toward the endplate by hand during install. They keep your fingers off the sharp wrench slots that castle nuts are usually rotated with. It's a small detail, but it makes the setup process a lot more comfortable.
