There is no rule that says a range gun has to be boring, and the GSG FireFly in purple proves it. This is a full-size .22 LR pistol with real heft to it, right around 26.6 ounces thanks to its alloy frame and aluminum slide. That weight is a good thing. It soaks up what little recoil a .22 produces and gives new shooters the same feel and handling as a centerfire pistol, without the centerfire ammo bill. The grip is full size and textured, so folks with larger hands are not left pinching a tiny rimfire frame.
The FireFly runs a simple blowback action with a fixed 4.9 inch barrel, a combo that tends to reward accuracy since the barrel never moves during cycling. The muzzle is threaded and GSG includes a 1/2×28 adapter in the box, which opens the door to the most common muzzle devices on the market. Up top you get a windage adjustable rear sight and a serrated slide that is easy to rack, while the frame carries a Picatinny rail underneath for a light or laser. The trigger is a true double action/single action setup with a decocker, so it doubles nicely as a low-cost trainer for anyone running a DA/SA centerfire gun.
Each pistol ships with one 13-round magazine, giving you 13+1 on tap. Like most blowback rimfires, the FireFly is built to run on high velocity .22 LR, and GSG calls for loads rated at 1250 fps or better in the 36 to 40 grain range. Stick with quality high velocity ammo and keep it reasonably clean, and this pistol will happily chew through range sessions all afternoon.
Between the eye-catching purple frame, the threaded barrel, and the full-size ergonomics, the FireFly covers a lot of ground. It works as a first pistol, a trainer, a suppressor host project, or just a fun plinker that stands out on the firing line. Cheap to feed, easy to shoot, and it does not look like everything else in the safe.
Yes, that is one of its big draws. The factory barrel uses a metric M9x0.75 thread, but GSG includes a 1/2×28 adapter in the box, which is the standard pitch for most .22 muzzle devices. Just thread on the adapter and you are ready to mount common rimfire cans and accessories.
GSG recommends high velocity .22 LR rated at 1250 fps or faster with 36 to 40 grain bullets. Like most blowback rimfire pistols, it needs that energy to cycle reliably, so skip the subsonic and bargain-bin standard velocity stuff. Quality high velocity loads like CCI Mini-Mags are a safe bet.
It is a strong pick for that role. The full-size grip and 26.6 ounce weight give it the feel of a centerfire pistol with almost zero recoil, and the DA/SA trigger with a decocker teaches the same manual of arms found on many larger handguns. Add in cheap .22 LR ammo and it makes learning the fundamentals easy on both the hands and the wallet.
This model ships with one 13-round magazine for a total of 13+1 with a round chambered. Spare FireFly magazines are available separately, and picking up an extra or two is a good idea to keep range sessions rolling without constant reloads.
