There's a reason short-barreled 5.56 builds end up being the gun people reach for most. The ATI Milsport HGA takes that formula and keeps it simple: forged aluminum upper and lower receivers, a 7.5 inch barrel with a 1:7 twist, and an overall length of just over 23 inches. That footprint tucks into places a full-size rifle never will, which is why so many of these end up riding along as a go-anywhere range gun or sitting close at hand for home defense.

What the Milsport HGA Gets Right

ATI didn't cut corners where it counts. The receivers are aluminum rather than polymer, the lower parts kit uses metal components, and the 7 inch free-float M-LOK handguard gives you real estate for a light, hand stop, or sling mount without adding bulk. The barrel is threaded 1/2×28, so swapping on your preferred muzzle device or running a suppressor is a five-minute job. Up top, the flat rail runs uninterrupted from the receiver onto the handguard, leaving plenty of room for a red dot and a set of flip-up sights. Note that sights are not included, so plan on adding your own optic or irons before your first trip out.

Familiar AR Controls, Compact Package

Everything about running this pistol will feel like second nature if you've spent any time behind an AR. The A2 grip, two-position thumb safety, and standard charging handle are all right where you expect them, and it feeds from any standard AR-15 magazine. The included blade-style stabilizing brace adds a steadying point that makes the short barrel much more controllable during quick strings of fire.

A Solid Starting Point or a Finished Gun

Some folks run the Milsport HGA exactly as it comes, and it holds its own that way. Others treat it as a foundation, adding an optic, a light, and a sling to build out a compact 5.56 that punches well above its size. Either approach works, and the forged receivers mean the core of the gun is worth building on. One 30-round magazine ships in the box, so all you need is ammo and a sight system to get started.
