The AF1911 Romulus from Alpha Foxtrot takes everything people love about the 1911 platform and brings it up to speed with how shooters actually run pistols today. This 3.5 inch compact version is chambered in 9mm and built around a double-stack polymer grip module, so you get a 17 round mag and a 20 round mag right in the box instead of the old single-stack seven or eight. The frame and slide are machined from SUS416 stainless steel and wear a polished black DLC finish that holds up to sweat, holster wear, and the kind of abuse a working gun sees.
The barrel is where this one earns its keep. It is a ramped bull barrel with porting up top that vents gas to fight muzzle rise, and combined with the weight of the steel slide, the Romulus stays remarkably flat through fast strings. The 416R stainless barrel runs a 1:10 right-hand twist with six-groove rifling, and the single-action trigger breaks crisp in the 3.5 to 4 pound range, which is exactly what you want from a 1911-style gun whether you are shooting groups or working a timer.
On top, the slide features a rear MOS cut with the RMSC plate already installed and an RMR plate included, so most popular compact and full-size red dots will bolt right on without a trip to a machinist. A bright Night Fision front sight handles low-light work if you prefer irons, and front and rear slide serrations make press checks easy. You also get an ambidextrous thumb safety, an extended slide release, a flared magwell for quicker reloads, an extended beavertail, and a full Picatinny rail underneath for a light or laser.
This one makes a lot of sense for shooters who want 2011-style performance for carry, home defense, or range days without stepping up to the price tags some of the big-name double-stack 1911s command. It is made entirely in the USA and backed by Alpha Foxtrot's one-year warranty on unmodified pistols. For a compact gun, it gives up very little to its full-size siblings.
The slide has a rear MOS cut and ships with the RMSC adapter plate installed, plus an RMR plate in the box. That covers the two most common compact optic footprints, so sights like the Holosun 507K, Shield RMSC pattern dots, and Trijicon RMR pattern optics will mount up. No milling or gunsmithing needed.
It ships with two double-stack magazines: one 17-round and one 20-round. The 17-rounder sits closer to flush for carry, while the 20-rounder is great for range sessions or as a reload.
The ports vent gas upward as you fire, which pushes the muzzle down and cuts felt recoil and muzzle flip. The practical result is faster follow-up shots and a flatter-shooting pistol, especially noticeable in a short 3.5 inch gun. Just be aware ported guns throw some flash and gas upward, so keep that in mind when shooting from retention or in low light.
It is best described as a 2011-style double-stack 1911. You keep the single-action trigger, thumb safety, and overall manual of arms of a classic 1911, but the steel frame mates to a polymer grip module that houses double-stack magazines. That is how it fits 17 to 20 rounds where an old GI gun held seven or eight.
That is exactly what this configuration is aimed at. The shortened barrel and slide make it easier to hide than the 4.25 inch models, while the double-stack grip still gives you a full firing grip and serious capacity. Pair it with a quality holster and a compact red dot and it makes a very capable carry setup, though all-steel construction means it carries heavier than a polymer striker gun.
