A hot barrel is one of those things you don't think about until you grab one by accident. ATI Outdoors built this heatshield to put a solid layer of formed steel between your hand and that barrel, so you can keep running shells without worrying about a burn. The black oxide finish blends in with just about any shotgun so it looks like it belongs there rather than an obvious add-on.
The long cooling slots running the length of the shield aren't just for looks. They add surface area to help pull heat away from the barrel and give you a grippy, non-slip surface to hold onto when the gun is warm. At 13-1/2 inches long, it covers the working length of most full-size pump barrels, and the steel construction means it'll take years of abuse without much fuss.
This one is built to work with most 12, 16, and 20 gauge and .410 pump barrels, covering the usual suspects like the Remington 870, Mossberg 500/535/590/835, Maverick 88, Winchester 1200/1300, and the SXP Defender. It won't work with ventilated or vent-rib barrels, and it needs at least 13.5 inches of clearance from the receiver to the barrel lug. A couple of specific barrels sit outside its range, so it's worth measuring before you order.
Installation is about as simple as it gets on most guns. You pull the barrel, slide the shield over it, and lock it down with the supplied hardware. Plenty of folks report bolting one onto an 870 or Mossberg 500 in ten minutes flat with no modifications. Barrels on the smaller end of the range may need a little custom fitting with the tabs, so if you're not comfortable tweaking it yourself a gunsmith can sort it in a few minutes. Yes. The elongated cooling slots add surface area to help the barrel shed heat, but the main job is keeping your hand off hot steel so you don't get burned during long strings of fire. It also gives you a secure, non-slip grip when the gun warms up.
The key is a tight, even fit before you cinch it down. Make sure the tabs conform snugly to the barrel and the screws are torqued firmly against a good grip surface. On correctly fitted barrels it stays put through everything from field loads to buck and slug.
