Description

The Forward Controls Design CN5F is a purpose-built castle nut for the Vltor A5 buffer system, and it solves a problem most builders run into when running an A5 length receiver extension. Standard mil-spec castle nuts leave a chunk of buffer tube threads exposed on an A5 setup. The CN5F is machined about a tenth of an inch longer than the standard CNF so it covers more of that threaded area and lets even the longer carbine stocks fully collapse on the RE-A5 and FCD's own RE5F.

What Sets the CN5F A5 Castle Nut Apart

FCD started with the original technical data package design and cleaned up the two spots that always bugged them. The staking notches went from a 45 degree cut to a 30 degree cut, which makes them roughly 25 percent longer and deeper than what you get on a mil-spec nut. That gives you more material to work with when you stake it, so once it's set it isn't going anywhere without deliberate effort on your part. There are also four notches instead of three, meaning at least three are always lined up and available no matter how the nut times out against your end plate.

Finish and Build on the Burnt Bronze A5 Castle Nut

This one is billet machined from 4140 PH steel and wears a burnt bronze Cerakote, which gives you a warm, earthy tone that pairs nicely with FDE and coyote builds. The outer edge has coarse serrations on the wrench side, a nice touch that makes threading the nut down against the end plate easier on your fingers than fighting the sharp wrench cutouts on a plain nut. It's made in the USA, and it carries the kind of fit and finish FCD is known for.

Keep in mind this is built for A5 length systems. It will thread onto a standard length receiver extension, but the extra length means most carbine stocks won't fully collapse on a standard tube. Pair it with an A5 receiver extension and you're set.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CN5F A5 castle nut designed to work with?

The CN5F is built specifically for the Vltor A5 buffer system and A5 length receiver extensions like the RE-A5 and FCD's RE5F. Its extra length covers more of the exposed buffer tube threads on those setups. It will thread onto a standard length receiver extension, but most carbine stocks won't fully collapse on a standard tube because of the added length.

Why does the CN5F have four staking notches instead of three?

A castle nut is meant to be staked in two places so it won't back off on its own. Standard mil-spec nuts have three notches, but the CN5F has four, which guarantees at least three are always visible and usable no matter how the nut times out against your end plate. It simply gives you more staking options.

What are the coarse serrations on the A5 castle nut for?

The serrations sit on the wrench side of the nut and make it easier to spin the castle nut down against the end plate by hand during installation. It's a single-use feature that saves your fingers from the sharp wrench cutouts you'd otherwise be gripping. Once it's threaded down you go back to a castle nut wrench to torque it.

Will most carbine stocks fully collapse with the CN5F installed?

On a Vltor RE-A5 or FCD RE5F, the CN5F is designed to let even the longer carbine stocks fully collapse. Keep in mind not every stock fully closes on every A5 compatible receiver extension, so it's worth checking your specific stock and tube combo before you build.
