Description

A baffle strike is one of the priciest mistakes you can make with a suppressor, and most of them are preventable with about thirty seconds of checking. That is the whole idea behind the Geissele Suppressor Alignment Gage, or SAG. This is the .50 caliber version, part number 10-1641-F, a 17 inch precision rod that slides down your bore and out through your mounted suppressor so you can see exactly where the bullet path sits relative to the baffle stack and end cap. If the rod exits with even spacing all the way around, you are good to go. If it drags on a baffle or hangs up before it clears the can, you just saved yourself a wrecked suppressor.

Why the Geissele SAG Earns a Spot in Your Range Bag

The thing people underestimate about suppressor alignment is how small errors stack up. Your can is a lot longer than the threaded interface holding it on, so a tiny deviation at the muzzle turns into a much bigger one at the exit hole. Thread runout, a shoulder that is not quite square, a mount that seated slightly off, any of those can compound into trouble. A long gage rod like this one makes those problems visible before you ever send a round through the can.

Built Like a Gage, Not a Cleaning Rod

Geissele grinds this rod from hardened steel to 0.002 inch under nominal bore diameter, with the outside diameter finished straight to within 0.001 inch over its full length. That undersize spec was chosen deliberately since real-world bores vary, and the long 17 inch length is what keeps the rod aligned to the bore, so a super tight fit is not needed for an accurate read. The hardening matters too. It resists wear from abrasive powder fouling, will not pick up burrs if it contacts a misaligned baffle, and keeps grit from embedding in the surface. Made in the U.S.A., this is the kind of tool you buy once and use on every new suppressor setup, every mount swap, and any host you have not fired suppressed before.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the Geissele Suppressor Alignment Gage?

With an unloaded firearm and your suppressor mounted, drop the rod down the bore from the chamber end so it passes through the can and out the end cap. You want to see fairly even spacing around the rod at the suppressor opening. If the rod rubs a baffle on its way through, or gets stuck before it exits, your setup is misaligned and needs attention before you shoot it suppressed.

Why is the .50 cal SAG ground under bore diameter instead of fitting tight?

Barrel bores vary in diameter and straightness from one gun to the next, and Geissele found that 0.002 inch under nominal is the sweet spot that fits the widest range of barrels. The 17 inch length is what does the aligning, since a long rod naturally centers itself in the bore. You do not need a snug fit to get an accurate read.

Will this gage rod scratch my bore or baffles?

It is designed not to. The rod is hardened specifically so it will not raise burrs if it contacts a misaligned baffle, and the hardened, finely finished surface resists picking up abrasive powder residue that could scratch your bore. That said, checking a clean bore is always good practice for the truest reading.

When should I run an alignment check with this gage?

Any time you mount a suppressor on a host you have not fired suppressed before, after installing a new muzzle device or mount, and periodically as part of routine maintenance. Small errors at the muzzle interface multiply over the length of the can, so a quick check with the rod before your first shot is cheap insurance against a baffle strike.
