This pack is sized for .35 caliber, .38/.357, and 9mm bores, which covers a big chunk of the common handgun and revolver calibers people actually shoot.
The appeal comes down to contact and consistency. A pellet has more load-bearing surface against the bore than a patch, and because it's a uniform plug you get the same fit every single stroke. Run a couple of wet patches with your solvent of choice first, then follow up with a dry felt pellet to pull out the loosened crud. A lot of folks keep them on hand specifically for when a match barrel or a favorite revolver starts losing its edge, since that final pellet often drags out the last of the fouling a patch leaves behind.
