The Safariland Model 27 is a no-nonsense inside-the-waistband rig designed around the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield, cut for right-handed carry in a clean plain black finish. It uses Safariland's signature J-shaped belt hook that slides over the waistband and catches underneath, which means you can run it on just about any belt without threading loops. The open-top design keeps your draw fast and predictable, making it a solid pick for everyday concealed carry or off-duty wear.
The body is built from SafariLaminate, a thermoformed material that holds its shape better than plain leather while still feeling slim against the body. A polymer insert molded inside keeps the holster mouth open after you draw, so you can reholster one-handed without collapsing the opening or fishing around with your support hand. That one feature alone separates it from a lot of basic leather pocket-style holsters.
This particular model is cut for the 179 fit code, which covers the M&P Shield in both 9mm and .40, including the Shield 1.0 and 2.0 variants. The J-hook rides over a 1.5-inch belt and tucks the gun close for a low-profile print. Folks who carry the Shield tend to run it anywhere from the 1 o'clock appendix spot to a 4 o'clock strongside position, and the hook mount gives you a bit of flexibility in how you angle it.
Safariland has been making duty and concealment gear for decades, and the Model 27 reflects that background with simple, durable construction and a secure hold on the pistol. It's lightweight, easy to clip on and take off without undoing your belt, and keeps the trigger guard covered the way a carry holster should. If you want a straightforward IWB option for your Shield that won't overcomplicate things, this one earns its keep.
This holster uses Safariland's 179 fit code, which is cut for the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm and .40 caliber. That covers the Shield 1.0 and 2.0 variants. It is molded specifically for the Shield, so it won't fit larger full-size M&P models.
Yes. There's a polymer insert molded inside the body that keeps the mouth of the holster propped open after you draw. That lets you reholster one-handed without the opening collapsing on you, which is one of the main advantages over basic leather IWB holsters.
The J-shaped belt hook is designed to work over a 1.5-inch (38mm) belt. Because it hooks over the waistband rather than threading through loops, you can clip it on and take it off without undoing your belt. A sturdy gun belt will give you the most stable carry.
This particular model, part number 27-179-61, is built for right-handed carry. If you draw with your left hand, you'll want to look for the left-hand version instead, which Safariland offers under a different part number.
