Description

L.E. Wilson has been machining precision reloading tools for over 80 years, and their Brass Case Gage carries that same reputation in a more refined package. This one is the stepped-up version of their classic steel gage, machined from U.S. brass bar stock. Brass gives you good corrosion resistance and a clean surface finish, which makes it a nice choice if you want a gage that holds up on the bench and reads easy every time you pick it up.

The idea behind the gage is simple but important. Drop a fired 243 Winchester case in, measure where the head sits relative to the gage surfaces, then size the case and drop it back in to see exactly how far you pushed the shoulder back. That lets you dial a full length sizing die to set the shoulder just a couple thousandths below your chamber instead of cranking it down and overworking the brass. Oversizing is one of the most common reloading mistakes out there, and it leads to short case life and case head separation. This tool takes the guesswork out of it.

What the 243 Win Brass Case Gage Checks

This is a one-piece, non-adjustable gage that reads two things: datum to head length for headspace and overall case length for trimming. The milled surfaces on the end let you lay a straight edge or caliper across the top so you can see whether a case is sitting high and needs trimmed, or whether it's within spec. It does not measure body diameters, so it is built to work with fired and resized cases to set your sizing and trimming routine.

Pairing the Case Gage with a Depth Micrometer

For the folks who want to chase the last thousandth, the gage works hand in hand with the Wilson Case Gage Depth Micrometer. That setup gives you a hard number on shoulder setback instead of eyeballing it, which is handy when you're loading for a bolt gun and want every piece of brass consistent. Even without the micrometer, a set of calipers and this gage will keep your 243 Win brass honest and your loads safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 243 Winchester Brass Case Gage actually measure?

It checks two things: datum to head length for headspace and overall case length for trimming. Drop a fired or resized case in, then use a caliper or the Wilson depth micrometer to read how the case head sits in the gage. Keep in mind it does not measure body diameters, so it is meant to guide your sizing and trimming, not check case width.

How is the brass gage different from the standard steel version?

This is the upgraded version of L.E. Wilson's classic steel case gage, machined from U.S. brass bar stock. The brass offers good corrosion resistance and a clean surface finish for reading your cases. Functionally it does the same job as the steel gage, just in a nicer material.

Can the 243 Win case gage help prevent overworking my brass?

That is really the whole point of it. By measuring a fired case, sizing it, and dropping it back in, you can see exactly how far the shoulder is being pushed back. That lets you set your full length die to bump the shoulder just a couple thousandths instead of oversizing, which extends case life and helps avoid case head separation.

Do I need a depth micrometer to use this gage?

No, a set of calipers will get the job done for most reloaders. The gage has milled surfaces so you can run a straight edge or caliper across the top to check length and headspace. If you want precise shoulder setback numbers, the Wilson Case Gage Depth Micrometer pairs with it nicely.
