Apex Tactical didn't just copy an old GI hammer and call it good. They pulled the hook and strut pin geometry straight off a 1968 Colt National Match pistol, the gun that eventually became the Gold Cup National Match, and turned that into a modern replacement part for Government model 1911s. The result is a spur hammer that looks right at home on a classic gun but breaks like it belongs on a match pistol.

Why the 1911 Classic Government Hammer Gets the Hook Right

Every hammer is cut on a wire EDM machine rather than stamped or forged, which keeps the hook height locked in at .018 to .020 inches on every single part. That kind of consistency matters because it means the hook geometry requires no stoning or polishing to perform right out of the box. Combined with a captive half cock notch borrowed from Mk IV Series 70 Colts, this hammer gives you a trigger job foundation that used to take a gunsmith with a stone and a lot of patience.

Built From A-2 Tool Steel for the Long Haul

Apex machines this hammer from heat treated A-2 tool steel and finishes it in black oxide, so it holds up to repeated dry firing and thousands of rounds without the hook rounding over or the finish wearing patchy. It works in Government frame 1911s built on Series 70 or Series 80 patterns, as long as they use the original spur hammer design. Just keep in mind this is the Government-length spur hammer, not the Commander version, so it's not a fit for those shorter frames.

Getting the Most Out of This Hammer

On its own this hammer already tightens up trigger feel, but Apex designed it to be paired with a quality sear for the full effect. Do that and you're looking at a trigger pull that lands in the 3.5 to 4 pound range, and it can be tuned lighter for competition use if that's the goal. It's a straightforward way to bring a tired GI trigger back to life, or to give a working gun the kind of clean break that usually only comes after a trip to a pistolsmith.
