Kimber took what worked on the 2K11 and folded it into a traditional single stack Government frame, and the result is one of the more interesting full size 1911s to come along in a while. The Custom SS Next Gen is all satin stainless steel, chambered in 9mm, with a 5 inch flush-fit barrel finished off with a deep crown at the muzzle. At a little over 36 ounces, that steel frame soaks up 9mm recoil to the point where fast follow-up shots feel almost effortless. It is the kind of gun that makes long range sessions easy on your hands and your wallet.
The headline feature is the optics-ready slide. Pop off the rear sight plate assembly and you have an RMR-pattern cut waiting for your red dot, with an adapter plate included from the factory. Prefer irons? The red dot front sight pairs with a fixed serrated black rear and works great as-is. Kimber also went with an external extractor for more consistent tension and reliability, plus a sloped disconnector ramp and the GT Performance trigger, which breaks clean in the 4 to 5 pound range with a short, positive reset. Front and rear slide serrations and a serrated flat top round out the slide work.
The frame wears black walnut grips with a G10 inlay for grip texture that looks as good as it functions, and the rounded heel takes the bite out of the grip frame whether you are carrying it or just shooting all afternoon. An extended ambidextrous thumb safety and high-sweep beavertail keep the controls familiar for anyone who has run a 1911 before. Capacity is 9+1, and Kimber ships it with two 9-round magazines so you are ready to shoot right out of the box. For 1911 fans who want modern features without giving up the classic lines, this one checks a lot of boxes.
The slide is cut for RMR-footprint red dots, and Kimber includes an adapter plate in the box, so popular optics like the Trijicon RMR and SRO mount up without hunting down extra hardware. The rear sight sits on a removable plate assembly, so you lift that off to expose the optic cut. If you stick with irons, the red dot front sight and serrated black rear work well on their own.
It ships with two 9-round magazines for a 9+1 total capacity. This is a traditional single stack 1911, so if you want more rounds on board, spare mags are the way to go.

With the full stainless build weighing in around 36 ounces, 9mm recoil is mild and the muzzle stays flat, which makes quick follow-up shots and long practice sessions a lot more pleasant.
