There is something fitting about wrapping Browning's smoothest-running gas gun in Realtree Original, the pattern a whole generation of hunters grew up with. This Maxus II wears that classic camo from buttpad to muzzle over a 26-inch barrel and a 3.5-inch chambered 12 gauge action, giving you a gun that looks like the old days but runs like anything but. The Power Drive Gas System is the heart of it, cycling everything from 2.75-inch target loads up to 3.5-inch magnums while bleeding off gas to take real bite out of recoil. Add the SoftFlex cheek pad and the thick Inflex recoil pad and a long morning of heavy steel loads stays a lot more pleasant than it has any right to be.
Browning made a pile of smart updates when they built the second-generation Maxus. Oversized bolt release and charging handle work fine with cold or gloved hands, rubber overmolding on the grip and forearm keeps things planted when everything is soaked, and the ramped trigger guard makes topping off the magazine quicker. The Lightning Trigger is a standout too, with a crisp feel and one of the fastest lock times you will find in an autoloader, which matters when a drake flares at the edge of the decoys. The screw-on magazine cap is a welcome change from the original Maxus, and the stock can be trimmed up to 3/4 inch for a proper fit.
Corrosion resistance runs all through this gun. The chamber and bore are chrome lined, and the bolt, bolt slide, shell carrier, and controls wear a slick nickel Teflon coating that shrugs off moisture and keeps the action running smooth. Up front you get a fiber optic sight paired with an ivory mid-bead for a fast, clean sight picture in low light. Three extended Invector-Plus choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder cover decoying birds and long passing shots alike, and a hard case is in the box so it travels right. Yes, that versatility is one of the biggest reasons hunters pick this gun. The Power Drive Gas System is tuned to run reliably across a wide spread of factory ammunition, from lighter field and dove loads up to full 3.5-inch magnum goose shells. As with most gas guns, give it a proper break-in and keep the gas system reasonably clean and it will feed just about anything.
Noticeably softer than most autoloaders in its class. The gas system soaks up a good chunk of the push before it ever reaches your shoulder, and the 1.5-inch Inflex recoil pad and SoftFlex cheek pad handle the rest. Even stout 3.5-inch loads are manageable enough for a full morning in the blind.
It runs Browning's Invector-Plus choke system, and three extended tubes come in the box: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. That covers everything from birds finishing in the decoys to longer passing shots. Since Invector-Plus is a common thread pattern, aftermarket waterfowl and turkey chokes are easy to find if you want to fine-tune your patterns.
Browning kept the gas system and Lightning Trigger that made the first Maxus a hit, then fixed the small stuff. The Maxus II adds a traditional screw-on magazine cap, oversized bolt release and charging handle, rubber overmolded grip panels, a SoftFlex cheek pad, and a stock that can be trimmed up to 3/4 inch for fit.
