A semi-auto .410 that actually works in the field is harder to find than most people expect. The gas-operated mechanism has to manage a much smaller charge than a 12 or 20 gauge, and a lot of guns in this category end up frustratingly finicky. Escort's answer is their SMART Valve Piston, a self-regulating gas piston that cycles both 2-3/4" and 3" magnum shells without manual adjustment. The system is patented and designed so you can mix load weights in the magazine without running into problems. The 28" barrel is chrome-lined, proof-tested at the factory, and built from chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel, giving it the kind of oxidation resistance you want when you're hunting in wet woods or field conditions.
The Mossy Oak Bottomland pattern covers both the synthetic stock and fore-end, with checkering on the grip surfaces for control when your hands are cold or wet. Four stock shims ship in the box so you can dial in drop and cast to match your build, and the rubber butt pad soaks up what little recoil a .410 produces. The aircraft-grade alloy receiver is anodized and includes an 11mm groove for scope or red dot mounting. Up top, a 7mm ventilated anti-glare rib runs the length of the barrel with a brass bead front sight at the muzzle. Sling swivel studs come mounted from the factory.
Five chokes are included: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. The multi-choke system is rated for steel shot, which matters if you're hunting waterfowl or going after birds where steel is required. The tube magazine holds 4+1 rounds, and an included migratory plug drops it to 2+1 when needed. There's also a magazine cut-off system built in for single-shot use. The loading switch does double duty as both the carrier latch release and bolt release when the bolt is locked back, so running the gun stays intuitive.
