The Winchester Super X4 has been earning its reputation in duck blinds, goose pits, and pheasant fields since its 2017 introduction, and the standard black synthetic model with a 28-inch barrel is the one that started it all. Built on the same Active Valve gas system that made the SX3 a favorite, the SX4 refines the formula with larger controls, a slimmer grip, a redesigned forearm, and a chrome-plated bore and chamber that holds up to steel shot and high-density loads season after season. At around 7 lbs 2 oz with a 28-inch barrel, it swings naturally and carries comfortably through a long day in the field.
The Active Valve system is genuinely one of the better self-regulating gas systems in this price range. It automatically meters the right amount of gas to cycle reliably across load types, so you are not re-tuning the gun when you switch from light 1-oz target loads to 3.5-inch goose magnums. The Quadra-Vent ports vent excess gas before it builds up, which keeps the action running cleaner between maintenance sessions. The trigger group drops out easily for cleaning, which is a small thing that makes a real difference when you are in the middle of a season.
The oversized bolt handle, bolt release, and ambidextrous crossbolt safety are noticeably easier to operate with cold or gloved hands compared to older Super X designs. The textured grip panels on both the stock and forearm replaced the old slick Dura-Touch coating and grip much better in wet conditions. Winchester's Inflex Technology recoil pad pulls the comb down and away from your cheek on firing, which meaningfully softens the kick from heavy magnum loads. The TruGlo fiber optic front sight is easy to pick up in low-light conditions, and the 1/4-inch vent rib keeps things slim without sacrificing a clean sighting plane. Three Invector-Plus flush choke tubes (Full, Modified, Improved Cylinder) are included, and the choke system has deep aftermarket support if you want to spec it out further for waterfowl or turkey.
Yes, the Active Valve gas system is specifically designed to self-regulate across a wide range of loads, from light 1-oz 2-3/4" shells up to 3.5" magnum loads. That said, like most gas-operated semi-autos, it can occasionally be finicky with very light loads when the gun is dirty or brand new. A thorough break-in and keeping the action clean goes a long way toward consistent cycling with light ammunition.
The SX4 ships with three Invector-Plus flush choke tubes: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. The Invector-Plus system is one of the most widely supported choke platforms on the market, so finding specialty chokes for waterfowl, turkey, or steel shot is easy. Just make sure any aftermarket tubes you buy are specifically rated for the load type you plan to use.
It is genuinely one of the better values in the 3.5-inch waterfowl shotgun category. The chrome-lined bore and chamber handle steel and high-density shot well, the matte black finish keeps reflections down in the blind, and the Active Valve system cycles heavy steel loads without issue. Multiple publications have put it up against guns costing significantly more and found the reliability comparable.
This specific model (511205292) is a right-hand configuration. However, the ambidextrous crossbolt safety can be switched to left-hand operation with minimal effort. Winchester does offer a dedicated left-hand SX4 variant if a fully mirrored setup is what you need.
The SX4 is relatively straightforward to maintain for a gas-operated shotgun. The trigger group drops out for easy access, and the Quadra-Vent ports help reduce carbon buildup in the gas system compared to designs without them. Regular cleaning after heavy use, especially with steel shot loads, will keep the action cycling smoothly.
The stock itself is fixed, but Winchester includes length of pull spacers so you can fine-tune the fit. Keep in mind there is no drop or cast adjustment on this model, so if you need a lot of stock modification, the standard configuration may not suit every shooter's fit preferences.
