Colt didn't design the Combat Unit Carbine in a boardroom. They brought in veteran trainers from the Colt Combat Unit, guys like Mike Pannone and Ken Hackathorn who have spent decades running carbines hard, and built the rifle around their input. The result is a 5.56 NATO AR-15 that fixes the things experienced people tend to change first on a standard M4-pattern gun, starting with the gas system. The mid-length setup here stretches the dwell time compared to a carbine-length system, which translates to a softer recoil impulse and a gun that stays flatter through fast strings of fire.
The 16.1 inch lightweight profile barrel keeps the whole rifle at a handy 6.47 pounds, so it swings quick and doesn't wear you out during a long range day or a carbine class. Up front, the extended M-LOK handguard gives you plenty of real estate for lights, hand stops, sling mounts, or whatever else you like to run, and it leaves room for a modern extended grip on the rail. The flat-top upper wears a continuous Picatinny rail, so mounting a red dot or LPVO is straightforward, and backup sights keep you in the fight if your optic goes down.
