The cut accommodates the optic while maintaining a secure fit for your firearm. Not every optic variant will work, so verify your specific sight if you have concerns.
The paddle is designed as a permanent attachment to this holster and isn't swappable for a belt loop. If you prefer belt carry without the paddle, 1791 offers their BH2.4S in belt holster configurations as well.
The steerhide starts firm to ensure proper retention, but it softens as you use and condition it. Many users report using the plastic bag molding method during break-in to speed up the process and get a perfect fit for their specific firearm. The leather shouldn't be excessively stiff out of the box, but it does improve with time.
