Anyone who has packed a rifle up a steep ridge knows the shoulder ache that sets in a few miles deep. The Butler Creek Comfort Stretch Alaskan Magnum sling is built to take the sting out of that carry. It uses soft, flexible closed-cell neoprene paired with the Comfort Stretch backing that flexes as you walk, soaking up the bounce a rigid strap would pass straight to your shoulder. Butler Creek says the design can trim felt weight by up to 50 percent, and folks who put miles on theirs tend to notice the difference by the end of a hunt.
The wide 2.5-inch shoulder pad is the heart of this sling. Instead of letting a thin strap dig into one spot, the pad spreads the load out so your rifle rides easier over rough country. Non-Slip Grippers on the underside keep it planted where you set it, so it stays put whether you are climbing, glassing, or dropping down into a draw. That kind of stability matters when your hands are busy and the last thing you want is your rifle sliding off your shoulder.
Four elastic cartridge loops sit on the front of the sling, giving you quick access to spare rounds without digging through a pack. It is a small touch that pays off when a follow-up shot counts. The whole thing adjusts from 20 inches out to 46 inches, so it fits a wide range of rifles and shotguns and works for shooters of different builds and layering.
One thing worth knowing up front: this model does not come with swivels, so it is set up to attach to swivels you already have on your firearm. If you need a version with swivels built in, Butler Creek makes that as a separate option. For a straightforward, comfortable carry sling from a name that has been in the game a long time, the Alaskan Magnum earns its keep in the field.
No, this model ships without swivels, so it is meant to attach to swivels already mounted on your rifle. It pairs with standard 1-inch swivels, which are common on most hunting rifles. If you want swivels included, Butler Creek offers a separate version of the Comfort Stretch Alaskan Magnum that has them built in.
Butler Creek rates it at up to a 50 percent reduction in felt weight. The stretchy backing and wide neoprene pad work together to absorb bounce and spread the load across your shoulder rather than concentrating it in one narrow line. It does not make your rifle physically lighter, but it makes carrying it far more comfortable on long walks.
It adjusts from 20 inches up to 46 inches, which covers the vast majority of rifles and shotguns. That range also lets you set it up for different carry heights or extra room when wearing heavy layers. As long as your firearm has 1-inch swivel studs or mounted swivels, it should work.
Those are four elastic cartridge holders that keep spare rounds right on the sling for quick access. It is handy in the field when you need a follow-up shot and do not want to fish around in a pack. They are sized for rifle cartridges and hold rounds snug so they do not rattle loose on the move.
