Description

There's a reason the Smoke Wagon has become one of the most popular cowboy revolvers on the market. Taylor's & Company took the traditional 1873 single-action design, built by Uberti in Italy, and gave it a handful of smart updates that make a real difference on the firing line. The hammer sits lower than a standard reproduction, so cocking it with your thumb feels quicker and more natural, and the widened front blade paired with a wider rear notch channel gets your eye on target noticeably faster than the skinny sights on most period-correct sixguns.

Built the Way a Smoke Wagon Should Be

The frame is forged steel with a genuine color case hardened finish, and each one comes out of the tank with its own swirl of blues, browns, and grays. The 5.5 inch barrel, cylinder, and remaining steel parts wear a deep blue that plays off the case colors beautifully. The checkered walnut grips are cut to the slimmer Navy size, which fills the hand without feeling bulky and keeps the gun from rolling around under recoil. At around 2.5 pounds with an overall length just over 11 inches, it balances the way a single action ought to.

The .45 Colt Smoke Wagon Experience

Chambered in .45 Long Colt, this is the cartridge the original Peacemaker was built around, and it still delivers that satisfying big-bore push with standard cowboy loads. The six-round cylinder loads through the traditional gate, and the 5.5 inch barrel is a sweet spot for a lot of folks, long enough for a solid sight radius and good velocity, short enough to clear leather without a fight.

Where This Smoke Wagon Shines

Cowboy action competitors gravitate to this revolver for its fast sights and smooth handling, but it's just as much at home punching paper on a lazy Saturday or riding in a display case between range trips. Whether you're building a matched pair for competition or picking up your first single action, this one earns its reputation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Smoke Wagon different from a standard 1873 reproduction?

Taylor's had Uberti build this one with a lower-sitting hammer and a widened front blade with a wider rear notch channel. The lower hammer makes thumb cocking faster and more comfortable, and the bigger sights pick up much quicker than the fine sights on most traditional reproductions. The Navy-size checkered walnut grips are also thinner than standard, which a lot of folks find gives better control.

Is the Taylors Smoke Wagon good for cowboy action shooting?

It's one of the most popular revolvers in the sport for good reason. The fast sight picture, low hammer, and slim grips were all chosen with competition in mind, and the 5.5 inch barrel gives a nice balance of sight radius and handling speed. Plenty of competitors run matched pairs of these.

What is the difference between this and the Smoke Wagon Taylor Tuned model?

This is the standard version, which is a great shooter right out of the box. The Taylor Tuned edition (MPN 550813DE) gets extra attention from Taylor's in-house gunsmiths, including hand polishing, precise timing, and custom springs for a lighter hammer and trigger pull. If you want the smoothest action available from the factory, the Tuned model is the upgrade path, but many owners are perfectly happy with the standard action.

Can I shoot .45 ACP in this revolver?

No, this cylinder is chambered for .45 Long Colt only, and .45 ACP is a rimless cartridge that won't headspace in it. Stick with .45 Colt ammunition, and standard pressure or cowboy action loads are the right choice for this traditional single-action design. Save the heavy magnum-level .45 Colt loads for revolvers specifically rated for them.
