The Buck Mark has been one of the most respected .22 LR pistols on the market since Browning introduced it in 1985, and the Challenge model carries on that tradition with a few touches that set it apart visually. The receiver is machined from a solid billet of aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum alloy to tight tolerances, keeping weight manageable at around 27 oz while still giving the pistol that solid, substantial feel in the hand. The slab-side steel barrel features polished flats that catch the light and give the gun a look that punches above its price class, and the gold-plated trigger is a classy detail that reminds you Browning actually put thought into how this thing looks, not just how it shoots.
On the shooting side, the Challenge delivers everything you'd want from a rimfire target pistol. The hand-reamed chamber and target-crowned 5.5" barrel give it excellent accuracy potential right out of the box, and the 8" sight radius that comes with that barrel length makes it easy to shoot tight groups at distance. Up front, a TruGlo fiber optic front sight pulls your eye in fast, even in lower light, while the Pro-Target adjustable rear sight lets you dial in windage and elevation to your preference. The crisp single-action trigger breaks cleanly with minimal creep, which goes a long way when you're trying to shoot consistently.
The slide has built-in recessed panels and raised side surfaces for a solid grip during cycling, plus a manual slide release that works with either hand. The rosewood textured grip panels look great and the frame itself is machined with finger grooves that line up with them for a cohesive, intentional feel rather than an afterthought. The manual thumb safety and mag release near the trigger guard round out a control layout that's intuitive and easy to run.
This pistol is a great fit for new shooters getting comfortable with handguns, experienced shooters who want an affordable and fun range gun, or anyone who appreciates a well-made rimfire with some real character. It ships with an ABS carry case, a 10-round magazine, cable lock, and owner's manual.
The Challenge model uses a slab-side barrel with polished flats instead of a heavy bull barrel, which gives it a slimmer, more classic profile and a slightly different balance. It also features rosewood textured grip panels and a gold-plated trigger for a more refined look. It's built on the same proven 7075 aluminum alloy receiver as the rest of the Buck Mark lineup, so the core quality is identical.
It's genuinely one of the better options out there for someone new to handguns. The .22 LR cartridge has almost no felt recoil, the single-action trigger breaks cleanly and predictably, and the adjustable sights mean you can tailor it to your eye rather than fighting a fixed rear sight. The grip ergonomics are well thought out and the pistol is easy to handle for a wide range of hand sizes.
The Challenge model does not come with a built-in Picatinny rail, but aftermarket rail options are widely available and straightforward to install. Once you have a rail mounted, the Buck Mark is a natural platform for a compact red dot, which pairs well with the already-great accuracy of the 5.5" barrel.
Like most rimfire pistols, the Buck Mark runs best with quality ammunition. High-velocity and standard velocity loads from reputable brands tend to cycle reliably. Bulk bargain ammo can occasionally cause issues, which is a characteristic of the rimfire format in general rather than a flaw specific to this pistol. Keeping it reasonably clean helps consistency too, since rimfire rounds are inherently dirtier than centerfire.
The hand-reamed chamber, target crown, and 8" sight radius work together to make this one of the more accurate rimfire pistols in its class. Consistent groups at 25 yards are very achievable with decent ammo and iron sights, and many people find it shoots tighter than they expected right out of the box. The adjustable Pro-Target rear sight gives you the ability to fine-tune point of impact for your preferred load.
