There's a lot to like about a rimfire snubbie that holds eight rounds and barely weighs a pound. The Taurus 942M Ultra-Lite is built on the same proven small frame as the Taurus 856, but chambered in .22 WMR, a cartridge that hits noticeably harder than .22 LR while still staying pleasant to shoot. The aluminum alloy frame brings the unloaded weight down to 17.8 ounces, which you'll appreciate the first time you carry it on a long hike or wear it in an ankle rig.
Most small revolvers give you five or six shots. This one gives you eight, thanks to a 1.34-inch cylinder that swings out for straightforward loading and ejection. The DA/SA action means you can run it double action or cock the exposed hammer for a lighter, crisper single-action break, which makes a real difference when you're stretching the little 2-inch barrel out at the range. Taurus reworked the trigger geometry on the 942 line compared to the old Model 94, and it shows. Sights are practical too: a pinned serrated ramp up front and a low-profile, drift-adjustable rear blade that stays snag-free but still lets you dial in your windage.
Because it shares its frame with the Taurus 85 and 856, the 942M works with a wide range of holsters and aftermarket grips already on the market, including laser grip options. The soft rubber factory grip has molded checkering and fits smaller hands well. It's also safe to dry fire, which is rare for a rimfire and makes it a fantastic training tool. And with .22 WMR ammo costing a fraction of centerfire, you can practice a lot more often.
The matte black finish over the hard anodized frame keeps things low-key and durable, and the transfer bar safety means the hammer can't reach the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pulled. Whether you want a lightweight trail gun, a backup piece, or just a fun eight-shot plinker, this one covers a lot of ground for its size.
The Ultra-Lite version uses an aluminum alloy frame and comes in at 17.8 ounces unloaded, while the all-steel 2-inch 942 models run around 23 ounces. That five-plus ounce difference is easy to feel when you're carrying it for hours, which is exactly why the Ultra-Lite exists.
