The Ruger Mark series has been one of the most recognized rimfire pistol lines in American shooting for decades, and the Mark IV is the best version of it yet. Ruger kept the classic silhouette and that natural, Luger-like grip angle that makes this gun point so well, but they fixed the one thing everybody complained about: takedown. Press the recessed button at the rear of the frame and the upper receiver tilts right off without any tools, letting you slide the bolt out from the back and clean the barrel chamber-to-muzzle the right way. Anyone who has wrestled with a Mark II or III knows how big a deal that actually is.
Under that blued finish, there is a cold hammer-forged barrel with a 1:16" right-hand twist and six grooves, which means the rifling is cut tight and consistent from the factory. Ruger's internal cylindrical bolt design keeps the sights locked in permanent alignment with the bore, something you don't get from pistols with a conventional moving slide. The aluminum grip frame is precision CNC-machined from a single billet, so there's no flex, no wobble. The checkered synthetic grip panels feel solid in hand and are replaceable if you ever want to swap them out for something different.
The ambidextrous manual safety is a nice touch and it can be converted to left-side-only with the included washer, which is a small detail Ruger got right. Magazine release is a push-button on the left side of the frame, and the mag drops free on release for faster reloads. The receiver is drilled and tapped, so mounting a Weaver or Picatinny rail for a red dot or optic is straightforward if the fixed front and rear sights aren't enough for your purposes. Comes with two 10-round magazines, so you're ready to run it as soon as you get home from the dealer.
Night and day. The Mark II and III were notorious for being frustrating to disassemble, often requiring a rubber mallet and some colorful language. The Mark IV replaces all of that with a single recessed button at the rear of the frame. Press it, tilt off the upper receiver, slide out the bolt, and you're ready to clean. It takes seconds instead of minutes.

No, Mark III magazines do not work in the Mark IV. The two generations use different magazine designs, so you will need Mark IV-specific mags. The good news is this pistol ships with two 10-round magazines already included.
The Mark IV Standard runs reliably on quality .22 LR ammunition. Standard and high-velocity loads like CCI Mini-Mags are a popular choice and tend to cycle cleanly. Like most semi-auto rimfires, it can be pickier about very cheap bulk ammo, particularly low-powered target loads, so quality matters more here than it does in a bolt-action.
It's one of the better options out there for someone getting started. The single-action trigger is clean and consistent, the .22 LR recoil is minimal, and the natural grip angle makes it easy to get on target quickly. The one-button takedown means cleaning is no longer a reason to dread basic maintenance.
The safety ships as an ambidextrous setup, accessible from both sides of the frame. If you prefer left-side-only operation, Ruger includes a washer in the box that lets you convert it. It's a straightforward modification that doesn't require a gunsmith.
