Zastava has been turning out Kalashnikov pattern firearms in Kragujevac, Serbia since long before most of us were born, and the ZPAP85 brings that heritage into a compact package chambered for 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. That chambering is the big deal here. You keep the classic AK feel and legendary reliability, but you feed it with the same ammo you already stockpile for your AR, and the lighter recoil impulse makes fast follow-up shots noticeably easier than a 7.62×39 Krink.
The ZPAP85 is descended from the Yugoslavian M85 carbine, itself a compact cousin of the battle-proven M70 rifle, and the construction shows it. You get a dimpled 1.5mm stamped steel receiver with a bulged front trunnion, the same overbuilt recipe Zastava uses on its full-size rifles, plus a 10 inch cold hammer forged barrel with chrome lining for long service life and easy cleanup after corrosive or steel-cased range sessions. The bolt carrier is hard nickel-moly steel, and the fire control parts are properly heat treated and matched at the factory. It weighs in at 6.6 pounds with a 19.3 inch overall length, so it handles quick in tight spaces.
This particular model wears a dark wood handguard with a synthetic grip, and it comes ready to grow with you. There is a Picatinny optics rail up top, a rear 1913 rail on the trunnion for mounting a brace, and a removable booster-style muzzle brake that spins off to expose standard 14×1 LH threads for the muzzle device of your choice. The hinged top cover makes takedown simple, the safety selector has a bolt hold-open notch, and the Krinkov-style adjustable rear sight pairs with a post front for solid irons right out of the box. It ships with one 30 round magazine and accepts most standard 5.56 AK pattern mags, so keeping it fed is no headache. For anyone who has wanted an AK that shares an ammo can with their AR, this is the one to grab.
Yes, it accepts most standard AK pattern magazines made for 5.56/.223, so you are not stuck hunting for proprietary mags. It ships with one 30 round magazine from the factory. Just make sure any extras you pick up are the 5.56 AK pattern, not 7.62×39 mags.
This model is set up for both right out of the box. There is a Picatinny rail on top for red dots or other optics, and a 1913 rail section on the rear trunnion that accepts common Picatinny-mount braces. No gunsmithing or extra adapters needed to get started.
Yes, the booster-style muzzle brake unthreads to reveal standard 14×1 LH threads underneath. That opens the door to flash hiders, other brakes, or a suppressor mount of your choosing. It is one of the easier AK pistols to customize at the muzzle.
The 5.56 chambering brings a lighter recoil impulse, which makes it easier to stay on target and shoot tighter groups faster. It also shoots flatter than 7.62×39. The big practical perk is ammo commonality, since you can feed it from the same supply as your AR-15.
