This 20 gauge takes the proven inertia-driven formula and cleans up the little annoyances that used to bug people about inertia guns. The Inertia Plus bolt uses an internal torsion spring to rotate the bolt head firmly into battery and keep it there, so a bump against the blind or a hard truck ride won't leave you with a click when you need a bang. It closes quietly too, with almost none of the bolt rattle you get from some inertia actions.
At 6 pounds 6 ounces with a 26-inch barrel, this ACE-R is the kind of gun you can tote all day through flooded timber or upland cover without thinking about it. Light 20 gauges can punish your shoulder, which is where the AIRY recoil pad earns its keep. Modeled after running shoe sole technology with an internal air pocket design, it cuts felt recoil by up to 30 percent, and paired with a soft comb it makes 3-inch loads a lot more civil. The deep bore drilled barrel and factory-lengthened forcing cone help patterns stay clean and consistent right out of the box.
Retay threaded the ACE series for the common Crio-style choke pattern, so aftermarket tubes are everywhere, and the gun ships with a full spread of chokes including an extended waterfowl tube. The oversized safety button reverses for left-handed use, the trigger group pops out with the push of a button for quick cleaning in the field, and the receiver comes drilled and tapped if you want to run an optic for turkey season. A shim kit lets you dial in cast and drop for a proper fit.
The full Mossy Oak Bottomland treatment covers the synthetic stock, receiver, and vent rib barrel, which makes this a natural pick for turkey hunters and timber duck hunters alike. Add in Retay's limited lifetime warranty and a 3+1 capacity with the fiber optic front bead, and you've got a working 20 gauge that's ready for the season the day it comes home.
This is one of the big upgrades with the ACE series. Retay's enhanced inertia system was designed to run everything from light field and target loads up through 3-inch magnums. Earlier Retay models were pickier about light loads, but the ACE-R was built specifically to address that.
The ACE-R uses the common Crio-style choke pattern, so chokes that fit newer Benelli shotguns will thread right in. That gives you a huge aftermarket to choose from. It also ships with a full set of flush chokes plus an extended waterfowl tube, so most people are covered out of the box.
