The FN 509 Tactical didn't start as a civilian pistol. It grew out of FN's submission for the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun System trials, and while the military went a different direction, FN took that engineering work and turned it into one of the most capable full-size pistols on the market. The result is a gun that carries genuine military-grade pedigree without the government-issue price tag — and in FDE, it looks the part too.
The headline feature is the 4.5-inch cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel with 1/2×28 threads, which means you can thread on most 9mm suppressors without any gunsmithing. The thread cap includes an integrated O-ring to keep it from backing off during use — a small detail that matters when you're running a can. Above the barrel, FN's patented Low-Profile Optics Mounting System lets you mount more than ten different miniature red dot optics without sending the slide off for milling. If you're not running an optic yet, the included slide cap has raised wings that protect your iron sight alignment and even gives you a textured ramp to rack the slide against your belt or boot if needed. And those iron sights? FN went with Trijicon tritium 3-dot night sights at suppressor height, so they co-witness properly whether you're running glass or not.
The frame is fully ambidextrous — slide stop lever and magazine release both — which is a bigger deal than it sounds. True ambi controls are still uncommon at this price point, and left-handed users especially will appreciate that nothing needs to be swapped or modified. The enhanced grip texture gives you a confident purchase in all conditions, and interchangeable backstraps let you dial in the fit. The MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail up front gives you plenty of room for a light or laser.
The 509 Tactical is a full-size pistol — 7.9 inches overall, weighing in at 27.9 ounces unloaded — so it settles into your hand with some real substance to it. Recoil is mild and manageable, and the front and rear cocking serrations make slide manipulations positive and sure. The trigger runs 5.5 to 7.5 pounds with a trigger safety built in, no external manual safety. Two magazines ship in the box: a 17-rounder for a lower-profile setup and a 24-round extended mag when capacity is the priority. The 24-rounder sits nearly flush with the bottom of the slide and is a blast at the range.

The barrel is threaded 1/2×28, which is the most common thread standard for 9mm suppressors — the vast majority of cans on the market will thread right on. The included thread cap has an integrated O-ring to keep it locked in place during use, which is a nice touch.
There is no external manual safety on this model. The 509 Tactical uses a trigger safety — a split trigger design that requires the integrated safety lever to be depressed before the trigger can be pulled. This is the same passive safety approach used by Glock, M&P, and other striker-fired pistols.
The Tactical model adds a threaded barrel, suppressor-height Trijicon night sights, the Low-Profile Optics Mounting System on the slide, and an extended 24-round magazine alongside the standard 17-rounder. The base 509 has none of those features. If you plan to run a suppressor or red dot, the Tactical is the right starting point.
Yes, both the slide stop lever and the magazine release are fully ambidextrous right out of the box — nothing needs to be swapped or reversed. This is a genuine advantage for left-handed shooters, as truly ambi controls at this level are not as common as the marketing on some competing pistols might suggest.
