A .380 revolver sounds a little odd until you shoot one. The .380 ACP was built from the ground up for short barrels, so it gives up almost nothing out of a 2-inch snub, and it kicks noticeably less than .38 Special out of a gun this light. That is the whole idea behind the Charter Arms Coyote. At just 14 ounces with a 7075 aluminum frame and 416 stainless barrel and cylinder, it is a wheelgun you can carry all day and practice with without your hand paying for it later.
Charter builds these on a solid one-piece frame rather than a side-plate design, which adds rigidity to a small revolver. The 2-inch barrel is ported on both sides of the front sight to knock down muzzle flip, and the 8-groove rifling helps squeeze the most velocity and accuracy out of the round. Diamond cuts on the underlug trim weight and give the gun a look you will not confuse with anything else in the case. Checkered rosewood grips round it out, and they are slim enough to hide well under a shirt without the cling you get from rubber.
Since .380 ACP is a rimless cartridge, the Coyote ships with two TK Custom moon clips that double as speed loaders and give you clean, positive ejection of all five cases at once. The gun will still fire without a clip since the rounds headspace on the case mouth, but the clips are the way to run it. Fixed sights, a traditional exposed hammer for double or single action shooting, and Charter's three-point cylinder lock-up keep the operation dead simple.
This one makes a lot of sense for newer revolver fans, anyone sensitive to recoil, or folks who want a five-shot snub they will genuinely enjoy shooting. It is made in Shelton, Connecticut, backed by Charter's lifetime warranty, and it shares holster fit with the classic Undercover, so carry options are easy to find. For best results, yes. The .380 ACP is a rimless cartridge, so the ejector star cannot grab the cases without a moon clip. The gun will fire without clips since rounds headspace on the case mouth, but you would have to pick empties out by hand and ignition is less consistent. Two TK Custom moon clips come in the box, and extras are inexpensive and available from Charter Arms.
It is built for exactly that. At 14 ounces with a 2-inch barrel, slim rosewood grips, and a snag-resistant profile, it disappears in a belt holster or jacket pocket. It also shares sizing with the Charter Arms Undercover, so holsters made for that model generally fit the Coyote too.
The Coyote has a port on each side of the front sight that vents gas upward as you fire. That counteracts muzzle flip, helping keep the sights on target between shots. Combined with the mild .380 ACP cartridge, it makes this one of the softest-shooting lightweight snub noses you can pick up.
