The 1911 purists and the optics crowd don't always agree, but the Ronin AOS makes a pretty compelling case for both sides. Springfield took their well-regarded Ronin platform and added the Agency Optic System in 2024, giving single-stack 1911 fans a factory-engineered way to run a red dot without sending their slide off to a machine shop. In .45 ACP with a 4.25" barrel, this is the Commander-length version of that idea, and it works.
The AOS is a plate-based mounting system that Springfield developed alongside Agency Arms. The cut in the slide accepts a series of interchangeable plates, each designed for a specific optic footprint, covering popular options like the Trijicon RMR, Shield RMSc, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter/Noblex. Every plate ships with an integrated rear sight built right in, so your co-witness is maintained regardless of which optic you mount. The cover plate that comes with the pistol doubles as a standard rear sight setup when you want to run it iron-only. It's a well-thought-out system that's already proven itself on the Prodigy line.
The Ronin AOS 4.25" keeps the forged-everything construction that Springfield has always led with. The slide is forged carbon steel with a hot salt blued finish, the 4.25" barrel is stainless steel and hammer-forged to match-grade tolerances with a 1-in-16 twist rate, and the frame is forged aluminum alloy finished in satin Cerakote. That alloy frame is a big part of why this gun lands around 29.5 ounces unloaded, which is noticeably lighter than an all-steel 1911 of the same size. Controls are classic single-action 1911: left-side thumb safety, beavertail grip safety with memory bump, and a skeletonized Gen 2 speed trigger. The pistol uses a traditional barrel bushing and disassembles exactly the way Browning intended, no proprietary tools or tricks needed.
Crossed Cannon wood laminate grips give it that signature Ronin two-tone look, and the fiber optic front sight paired with the white dot rear makes for a quick, usable sight picture whether you're at the range or carrying it.
The AOS system uses interchangeable plates that cover several popular optic footprints, including the Trijicon RMR, Shield RMSc, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, and Docter/Noblex. Each plate has an integrated rear sight to maintain co-witness with your optic. The plates are sold separately, and the pistol ships with a cover plate that keeps the standard iron sight configuration intact until you're ready to mount an optic.
Thanks to the forged aluminum alloy frame, this pistol comes in around 29.5 ounces unloaded. A comparable all-steel Commander-length 1911 typically weighs in the 34-36 ounce range, so you're saving a meaningful amount of weight while still getting a forged frame construction. That lighter carry weight makes a real difference over the course of a full day.
The 4.25" Ronin AOS uses a Commander-length recoil system with a traditional barrel bushing, just like the original 1911 design. This keeps the disassembly process straightforward and tool-free, and it means standard Commander-length 1911 recoil springs and bushings will work as replacements.
The combination of a 4.25" barrel and a forged alloy frame makes this one of the more carry-friendly .45 ACP 1911 options out there. At around 29.5 ounces, it's lighter than most steel-framed 1911s of the same size, and the Commander-length format has been a proven carry platform for decades. Paired with a good IWB or OWB holster designed for Commander-length 1911s, it carries well.
The pistol ships with just the cover plate, which includes the integral rear sight and lets you run the gun on irons right out of the box. Additional optic-specific plates are sold separately and are labeled with a code corresponding to the footprint they support. Once installed, the platform is known for being extremely secure and stable under recoil.
