The Radians Competitor is about as straightforward as hearing protection gets, and that's exactly the point. It's a traditional over-the-head passive earmuff that blocks out damaging noise without any batteries, electronics, or fuss. With a Noise Reduction Rating of 26 dB, it gives you real protection whether you're on the firing line, running the table saw, or knocking out yard work with the mower.
The fit is where these earn their keep. A fully adjustable steel headband lets you set the tension and height, while the individually adjustable earcups slide up and down to match the shape of your head. That means a proper seal around each ear, which is what actually gets you the full noise reduction. The foam-filled cushions have a soft, breathable contact surface, so you're not fighting sweaty, pinched ears an hour into your session.
Radians designed the Competitor for rugged environments, and the durable construction holds up to being tossed in a range bag, left in the truck, or handed around at the workbench. It's a multi-position muff that folds down to a manageable footprint when you're packing up. For loud indoor ranges or bigger calibers, you can double up and wear foam earplugs underneath for even more protection.
This is the kind of muff that makes sense to keep a couple of around. Grab a pair for yourself, keep spares for guests who show up without their own, and stash one in the shop. It comes in black or red, weighs next to nothing, and does its one job well without asking you to think about it. For anyone who wants dependable ear protection without paying for features they'll never use, the Competitor is tough to argue with.
The 26 dB NRR handles most range use well, including outdoor rifle and pistol shooting. For loud indoor ranges or magnum calibers, wearing foam earplugs underneath the muffs adds a solid extra layer of protection. Doubling up is a common and effective move when the environment gets especially loud.
The Competitor is a passive earmuff, so there are no batteries, microphones, or amplification. They simply block sound rather than letting you hear range commands or conversation at reduced volume. If you want to hear ambient sound while still protecting your ears, you'd want an electronic muff instead.
Yes. The steel headband adjusts for tension and height, and the earcups move up and down independently to match your head shape. That flexibility helps get a good seal on most adult heads for reliable noise reduction.
The Competitor is a multi-position muff that collapses down to a compact size, so it tucks into a range bag or gear box easily. It's lightweight and built to handle the knocks that come with getting tossed around. That makes it a convenient spare to keep on hand for guests too.
