Dan Wesson built the ECP by taking the heavy, match-grade bull barrel from their Officer-size ECO and moving it into a slightly bigger Commander platform. The result is a 4-inch, 29-ounce pistol that carries like a compact but shoots like a full-size. The stainless steel slide and forged aluminum frame combination keeps weight in check without sacrificing the solid, tight feel that Dan Wesson is known for. Paired with a 9+1 capacity in 9mm, this is a gun that punches well above its size.
The 4-inch bull barrel is flush-cut with a 30-degree crown, which makes field stripping noticeably easier than a traditional bushing setup. More importantly, the bull profile adds forward weight that slows down the unlocking cycle, which translates to softer recoil and more consistent accuracy. The flat-wire recoil spring is rated for 15,000 rounds, roughly three times what you'd expect from a standard dual-spring 1911 setup, so long-term reliability isn't a concern.
The bobtail mainspring housing is one of those details you either love immediately or grow to appreciate once you start carrying it concealed. It rounds off the bottom corner of the frame, reducing printing and making it more comfortable against the body during extended wear. The tapered G10 grips slim down toward the top, putting the trigger closer for those with shorter fingers without making the grip feel thin at the bottom where you need purchase. Front strap and mainspring housing both get 25 LPI checkering, and the trigger guard is undercut for a higher, more stable hold. Dan Wesson also added a square commander-style hammer and a flat K-style trigger that keeps the overall profile clean.
Sights are a brass bead up front with a U-notch rear, and the tri-topped slide includes a serrated flat rib between them to kill glare. It's a fast, intuitive sight picture that works well in both range and defensive contexts. Two 9-round magazines are included.
It was designed specifically with carry in mind. The bobtail frame rounds off the bottom corner that tends to print through a cover garment, and at 29 ounces unloaded it's light for a steel-slide 1911. The 4-inch barrel keeps the overall length to 7.64 inches, which holsters and conceals well under most carry setups.
A bull barrel is thicker through the whole profile, which adds forward weight and slows the unlocking cycle slightly for smoother, more consistent cycling. It also eliminates the traditional barrel bushing, so field stripping is simpler and there's one less component to maintain. The flush-cut, 30-degree crown on the ECP's barrel also contributes to reliable accuracy shot to shot.
The bull barrel's added forward mass helps absorb and redirect muzzle flip, and the flat-wire recoil spring is rated for 15,000 rounds, which means it's tuned for longevity and consistent spring pressure. The 25 LPI checkered front strap and G10 grips also give you a solid purchase so the gun stays planted in your hand. People who have shot it consistently describe the recoil as light and manageable despite the compact size.
The ECP is a 9mm 1911, so it uses single-stack 9mm 1911-pattern magazines. Dan Wesson includes two 9-round magazines in the box. Standard single-stack 9mm 1911 mags from reputable makers will generally work, but it's worth testing any aftermarket options before relying on them for carry.
The ECP comes with a flat K-style trigger, which has a three-hole layout and a clean, low-profile appearance. The hammer is a square commander-style design, which is a tactical-leaning take on the traditional commander hammer. Both parts fit the overall aesthetic of the gun and contribute to the semi-custom feel Dan Wesson is known for.
It's actually one of the better 1911 options for that. The tapered G10 grips are slimmer at the top than the bottom, which naturally shortens the reach to the trigger. The undercut trigger guard also lets you get a higher grip, and the bobtail frame keeps the bottom of the grip from feeling oversized. Dan Wesson specifically designed these features with a wider range of hand sizes in mind.
