The Maverick 88 Cruiser takes everything people like about the standard 88 and trims it down into a compact, pistol grip package built for maneuverability. With a 20 inch barrel and an overall length right around 30 inches, this thing tucks into corners, cabinets, and vehicle racks where a full stocked shotgun just gets in the way. The extended magazine tube gives you 7+1 on tap with 2-3/4 inch shells, which is a serious payload for a gun this size.
Under the blued finish, this is the same basic architecture as the Mossberg 500, and that matters. Dual extractors pull spent hulls out even when the gun is hot or dirty, twin action bars keep the pump stroke smooth and bind free, and the anti-jam elevator feeds shells reliably whether you are running bargain birdshot or heavy buckshot. Positive steel-to-steel lockup rounds out a design that has been earning its keep since 1988. The 3 inch chamber handles magnum loads when you want them, though 2-3/4 inch shells are noticeably easier to manage out of a pistol grip gun.
The cross-bolt safety sits right at the trigger guard, which is a real advantage on a pistol grip configuration since your firing hand never has to leave its position to work it. For the most part, yes. Barrels, stocks, forends, and most other accessories interchange between the Maverick 88 and the Mossberg 500 as long as you match gauge, barrel length, and magazine capacity. The main exception is the trigger group, which does not swap between the two, and the safety location differs since the 88 uses a cross-bolt at the trigger guard instead of the 500's tang safety.
It has a 3 inch chamber, so it runs both 2-3/4 inch and 3 inch 12 gauge shells. The 7+1 capacity applies to 2-3/4 inch shells; you will fit fewer 3 inch magnums in the tube. Out of a pistol grip gun, most people find 2-3/4 inch loads a lot more pleasant to run.
Yes, standard rifled slugs, often called Foster slugs, work fine through a smooth cylinder bore barrel like this one. Skip sabot slugs though, since those are designed for rifled barrels and will not perform well here. For defensive use, buckshot patterns well at close range out of the 20 inch tube.
The big gain with this 20 inch version is capacity. The longer barrel pairs with an extended magazine tube for 7+1, compared to 5+1 on the 18.5 inch model. You give up a little compactness, but the overall length is still right around 30 inches, so it remains very easy to move through tight spaces.
