Metal-framed pistols have been making a serious comeback, and Smith & Wesson did it the right way with the M&P9 M2.0 Metal. Instead of reinventing the wheel, they took the proven M2.0 platform and machined the frame from 7075-T6 aluminum, then dressed the whole gun in Tungsten Gray Cerakote. The surprising part is the weight. It only picks up a couple ounces over the polymer version, so you get that solid, planted feel in the hand without lugging around a boat anchor. The 18-degree grip angle and low bore axis carry over too, which keeps the muzzle flat and gets your sights back on target quickly.
A rigid aluminum frame does not flex under recoil the way polymer can, and you notice it most during fast strings of fire. Pair that with the M2.0 flat-face trigger and enhanced sear, and this is one of the better factory striker-fired triggers out there, with a clean break and a short, positive reset. The deep scalloped slide serrations up front and back give you real purchase for press checks and racking the slide, even with sweaty or gloved hands.
The slide comes cut for optics and works with Smith & Wesson's adapter plate system, so mounting your favorite red dot is straightforward. Until then, the drift-adjustable white three-dot sights get the job done. Four interchangeable palmswell inserts in small, medium, medium-large, and large let you dial in grip fit and trigger reach, and the reversible magazine release keeps lefties covered. There is a Picatinny rail up front for a light, and the 4.25 inch stainless steel barrel wears an Armornite finish for corrosion resistance.
This version ships with two 10-round magazines, and since it is built on the M&P platform, it plays nice with existing M2.0 full-size magazines, holsters, and palmswells you may already own. Whether it ends up as a range gun, nightstand pistol, or duty-style sidearm, the M2.0 Metal is a sharp-looking 9mm that runs as good as it looks.
Not really, and that surprises a lot of people. The 7075-T6 aluminum frame only adds a couple ounces over the polymer version, so it still carries comfortably. What you gain is a more rigid, planted feel that helps tame recoil during faster shooting.
The slide uses Smith & Wesson's adapter plate system, which covers most of the popular pistol red dot footprints on the market. You pick the plate that matches your optic and mount it with the included hardware. If you run irons, the drift-adjustable white three-dot sights work fine on their own.
Yes. Since the M2.0 Metal is built on the same M&P platform, it accepts full-size M&P9 M2.0 magazines and fits most holsters made for the standard full-size M2.0. The palmswell inserts interchange as well, so accessories you already own carry right over.
No, this version (MPN 14161) does not have a manual thumb safety. It relies on the standard M&P internal safeties and a hinged trigger design. Plenty of folks prefer this setup for defensive use since there is nothing extra to disengage under stress.
