There's something refreshing about a firearm that knows exactly what it is. The Chiappa Honcho is a compact pump gun with a 14 inch barrel, a bird's head polymer grip, and no pretense of being anything other than a grab and go problem solver. At 27 inches overall and around five pounds, it stows in places a full size shotgun never could: a truck box, a pack, a corner of the cabin, wherever you want serious capability in a small footprint.
Here's the thing about short bird's head grip guns: the 12 gauge versions are famous for beating up your hands. Going with 20 gauge is the smart play for most people. You still get a meaningful payload of buckshot or heavy field loads, but the recoil impulse is far more manageable when you're firing without a shoulder stock. The 3 inch chamber gives you flexibility to run everything from light 2-3/4 inch trainers to full power magnum loads, and the 5+1 capacity means you're not short on follow ups.
Chiappa put the Honcho together with an aluminum receiver and a steel barrel, feeding from the bottom and ejecting out the side like a traditional pump. The controls will feel familiar right away: manual safety at the rear of the trigger guard, slide release up front, and a plain brass style bead out on the muzzle that suits the close range role this gun was made for. The matte black finish and synthetic furniture shrug off weather and handling wear, and the included ambidextrous sling attachment makes it easy to carry hands free.
Technique matters with these compact pump guns. Keep a firm push pull grip, lean into it, and pattern your chosen load at realistic distances before you count on it. Do that and the Honcho rewards you with a fast handling, easy storing 20 gauge that's genuinely fun on the range and reassuring to have within reach. For camp duty, home defense setups, or just something different in the safe, this one earns its spot.
It's noticeably softer than the 12 gauge version, which is a big part of why the 20 gauge Honcho is so popular. With a bird's head grip and no shoulder stock, recoil management comes down to grip technique, and the 20 gauge makes that much easier. Light 2-3/4 inch loads are downright pleasant, while 3 inch magnums still have some bark but stay controllable.
Yes. The 3 inch chamber handles full length magnum 20 gauge shells as well as standard 2-3/4 inch loads. That gives you a wide range of options, from low recoil practice loads to heavier buckshot for defensive use.
It uses a simple front bead sight, which fits the gun's purpose well. This is a close range, point and shoot platform, and a bead keeps things fast and uncluttered. As with any shotgun, pattern your defensive load at the distances you expect to use it so you know exactly where it hits.
With its 14 inch barrel, the whole gun measures just 27 inches long and weighs around five pounds. That makes it easy to store in a truck, boat compartment, pack, or bedside setup where a full length shotgun would be awkward. It fills the same niche as other compact bird's head pump guns but in a softer shooting 20 gauge package with 5+1 on board.
