When the geese are working the edge of your spread and the shots start stretching out, you want a shell with real reach and authority. Rio's Royal BlueSteel Super Magnum delivers exactly that: a 3.5-inch 12 gauge load pushing 1 3/8 ounces of BB steel shot at a blistering 1,550 fps. That combination of big pellets and serious speed is what carries energy downrange and puts birds down cleanly at distance.
Rio manufactures every piece of this cartridge in-house, from the hull and primer to the powder, wad, and shot. The powders and wads are tuned specifically for the demands of hard steel shot, which is why these pattern consistently and cycle reliably in semi-autos. The steel pellets are perfectly spherical, and that uniformity translates to tighter, more predictable patterns when you throw them through a full or extended-range choke.
BB is a proven size for geese and big late-season ducks. Because steel is lighter than lead, bumping up to a larger pellet like BB keeps the downrange energy where you need it for tough, feathered birds at longer ranges. A 1 3/8-ounce BB payload gives you a solid pellet count without sacrificing the individual pellet weight that punches through. It's a great pick for a mixed bag of honkers and heavy mallards, or for pass shooting when the birds won't commit to the decoys.
As a lead-free load, the Royal BlueSteel is right at home in wetlands and waterfowl country. Rio built its reputation as a global leader in non-toxic shotshells, and this Super Magnum offering leans on that experience to deliver dependable results in cold, wet, and generally miserable hunting conditions. Load up the magazine, pick your spot, and let the shell do the heavy lifting.
This 3.5-inch BB load is built for waterfowl, and it shines on geese and big late-season ducks. The larger BB pellets and 1,550 fps velocity carry energy well at longer ranges, making it a strong choice for pass shooting and birds that hang at the edge of the spread. If you're chasing honkers or a mixed bag of geese and heavy mallards, this is a versatile pick.
Yes, the Royal BlueSteel uses steel shot, so it's a lead-free, non-toxic load made for wetland and waterfowl hunting. Rio is a well-known global leader in non-toxic shotshells and builds this line specifically to perform like traditional loads without the lead. It's a solid fit for anywhere non-toxic ammunition is called for.
Each box holds 25 rounds of the 12 gauge 3.5-inch BB steel shotshells. That's a good amount to cover a full hunt or a few outings depending on how the birds are flying.
You'll need a 12 gauge shotgun with a 3.5-inch chamber to run this Super Magnum load. Many dedicated waterfowl guns are chambered for 3.5-inch shells, but plenty of standard field guns max out at 3 inches, so check your barrel or receiver markings first. Pairing them with a full or extended-range choke will help tighten up your patterns at distance.
