A locked safe keeps your guns secure, but it does nothing to stop the slow damage that creeps in from trapped moisture. The Hornady Dehumidifier Rod HD 36" is built to handle that second job. It gently raises the temperature inside your safe above the surrounding room, which pushes the condensation point to the outside of the enclosure and keeps the air around your firearms, ammo, and gear dry. For anyone storing valuables in a humid climate or a basement, that steady protection makes a real difference over the long haul.
This is the big one in Hornady's lineup. The 36" HD rod is rated for spaces up to 500 cubic feet, so it's a smart match for larger safes, gun cabinets, or even a dedicated gun room. It uses a series of heat-dispersing fins that maximize heat transfer off the rod without taking up extra shelf space or scorching anything sitting nearby. That fin design is what gives the HD line close to double the output of a standard dehumidifier rod while staying compact.
Setup is about as simple as it gets. The rod runs off a standard 110V AC household outlet and mounts horizontally or vertically using the included mounting feet. For best results, you want it low and horizontal, along the back or floor of the safe, so the warm air rises and circulates. The plug is designed to pop off the cord so you can thread it through a tight port or wiring hole, then reattach it on the other side. It's maintenance-free too, no crystals to recharge and nothing to dry out in the oven.
Hornady designed the Rod HD to drop right into its Square-Lok organization panels, but it works just as well in third-party safes, cabinets, and storage containers. The red and black aluminum build looks right at home inside most safe interiors, and keeping it plugged in year-round means you never have to think about whether your collection is protected.
The 36" HD rod is rated for spaces up to 500 cubic feet, making it well suited to large safes, tall gun cabinets, and dedicated gun rooms. If you're working with a smaller enclosure, Hornady also offers an 18" version that covers up to 200 cubic feet. Matching the rod size to your space gives you the most even moisture control.
Yes, it's designed to stay plugged into a standard 110V AC outlet so it provides constant, maintenance-free protection. Unlike crystal or desiccant units, there's nothing to recharge or dry out. Keeping it connected year-round is what keeps the interior consistently dry.
The optimal spot is horizontal, low along the back or floor of the safe or cabinet. Mounting it there lets the warm air rise and circulate naturally through the whole interior. The included mounting feet let you secure it on a horizontal or vertical surface, and they hold the rod a safe distance off the surface.
Absolutely. While it integrates cleanly with Hornady's Square-Lok panels, it's built to install in a wide variety of third-party safes, cabinets, and storage containers. The removable plug even lets you thread the cord through a tight wiring port before reattaching it.
