American Precision Arms didn't just tweak the original Fat Bastard for this Gen 4 release, they rebuilt the port system from the ground up. This 6mm version is machined for .243 caliber bullets and smaller, covering popular rounds like 6mm Creedmoor and 243 Winchester, and it's cut with 5/8×24 threads to fit a wide range of barrels between .8 and 1.1 inch in diameter.
The big development here is the calibrated U.R.P. tunable top port system. APA spent a year testing port size, placement, and gas flow to get vertical muzzle movement as close to zero as possible, which is a big deal if you're trying to track hits on steel or spot your own trace at distance. On top of that, the internal manifold and port geometry were reworked to soften the concussion without giving up any of the recoil reduction the Bastard line is known for. That's a tough balance to strike, since brakes that cut recoil hard usually blast louder, but the redesigned ports and manifold shape the sound into a lower, less jarring frequency.
At 3.30 inches long, 1.10 inches in diameter, and 6.4 ounces, this is the larger of APA's Bastard offerings, giving it more surface area to work with for gas management on magnum-capable 6mm builds. It's a self-timing design, so there's no fiddling with shims or crush washers to get it indexed correctly, and the caliber marking along with a level line machined right on the face makes it easy to confirm proper alignment once it's torqued down.
This brake is built for shooters running high volume through their rifles, whether that's a weekend at the range or a full competition season. The steel construction holds up to repeated firing without losing its edge, and because it's self-timing, taking it off for cleaning or swapping barrels doesn't turn into a project every time.
This 6mm version is machined for any cartridge using a .243 inch diameter bullet or smaller, which covers 6mm Creedmoor and 243 Winchester among others. If you're running a larger bullet diameter, APA makes this same brake in 6.5mm, .308, and .338 versions.
It's a self-timing brake, so it indexes and locks up correctly without shims or a crush washer, which makes it much simpler than older-style brakes to install at home. That said, if you're not comfortable torquing a muzzle device to spec, having a gunsmith handle it is never a bad call.
